Severe Jaw clenching -why? And what to do?

Hi everyone,

I’ve had PD for 8 years and on Sinemet 100 x6 a day for last 3 years. Over last 6 months I developed chronic anxiety and been taking Lexapro for that. Also told I am having a bad menopause and taking Livial for that. Also PD getting worse and starting in my other side too. Talking in my sleep and waking up with horrendous jaw clenching. In the day too. Been on Xadago last 4 weeks. Had so much physio and massage on my neck due to jaw clenching. I can’t go on like this. Dr says bruxism -jaw clenching is a symptom of menopause, anxiety and PD. Does anyone have the same? What do you do? Will it go away? Is it caused or helped by meds?

My dentist is making a bite splint to wear at night, but i’m Not sure I will be able to deal with it. Years ago I tried one and it made me gag and drool. Now I really do drool even without one.

Advice please or reality. Do I just have to suffer it? I am 54.

I have the same problem along with chattering teeth at times. I use a dental splint made of silicone at night which does help. My meds (c/l) relieve the jaw issue but I don’t take them at night due to dyskinesia.

If you experience repetitive movements in the jaw, face or even the tongue it could also be caused by oromandibular dystonia.

Jaw or tongue (oromandibular dystonia). You might experience slurred speech, drooling, and difficulty chewing or swallowing. Oromandibular dystonia can be painful and often occurs in combination with cervical dystonia or blepharospasms.

Maybe worth looking into.

cogentin and/or botox possibly??? Ruled out tetanus?

I can't remember why, but I switched a while back from Lexapro to Wellbutrin, then to Cymbalta, which has a more calming effect. Boy, going through menopause is no joke. I must say, life is easier for me at 68 than it was when I was 58!

Yes, I know of cases of adverse reaction to lexapro. It can act as a neurostimulant on some muscles and force them into contracture. If you are on lexapro for anything like depression or anxiety, consider seriously a switch to cymbalta.
