Swollen feet and ankles

Anyone have experience with swollen feet and ankles. Wearing compression stockings but that is not solving issue. No fluid retention elsewhere. I’ve heard some medications can cause fluid retention but this is so isolated and more swollen in left side. Any experience would be appreciated.

I've got fluid retention in my lower legs which I have never experienced before taking Sinemet . Also have what looks like freckling, or pigmentation spots on my lower legs which I never had before this same medication.

I have skin pigmentation caused by taking amantadine.

I experience exact same side effects from Amantadine. Compression socks have also not helped with fluid retention.

Will talk to Dr. about tapering off amantadine. Compression socks and elevation are not helping. Appreciate all the responses and input. Very, very helpful.

I cut down from 3 a day to 2. Tremors still the same. Comes with the territory. Such is PD.

Health1961,

Sometimes sleeping with one pillow under your calves to elevate them can help to reduce the swelling. For some people it can also reduce pressure and pain in the lower back to help with sleep.

Forgot about that! Thanks Art, great suggestion.

I had fluid retention in my lower legs and ankles when I took ropinirole. I stopped taking it and it went away. I also experienced splotches around my knees when I took amantadine; that cleared up when I stopped taking it.

I understand it to be a circulation issue. It comes with age but may be exacerbated by meds. Try elevating your feet above your heart.

I agree; my husband experienced edema with Amantadine. Discontinued and the edema went away.

Was he taking amantadine? I’m beginning to think that may be our issue.

I had swelling in my right leg and foot last summer. I stopped taking Amantadine, I started wearing compression socks. I continued to do cardio exercise for my lower legs. And I purchased a Revitive electrical muscle stimulator machine which I use for 30 minutes each evening. Someone once called the calves our second heart. PD patients are notorious for walking with small steps and not flexing their feet. This approach seems to work.

For me, I used to have swollen ankles & feet more often on hot days last year and probably sometimes year before. I felt it was because of rigidity that restricted my ankle movement and the way I stand because lack of balance so the ankle suffer. I only took/take Kinson and B1, Magnesium and some other supplements. I was hoping that HDT B1 would help (edema?) but sometimes it still happened.

Recently I have been taking 5,000 - 10,000 IU D3 and K2 for PD. Now looks like I don't have the swollen anymore, and if it does, then very subtle that I'm not quite sure if it is swollen, and not that often, even on very hot days. Also it seems helps with my food allergy (prawns).

Staying in a seated position for too long and not consuming enough water is the cause in my case.

1961:

My extensive experience with cancer clinical trials (breast, prostate and especially bladder) is that radical surgical removal of multiple lympth nodes will create almost "perpetual" swollen limbs (legs and/or arms) and in the case of bladder cancer where removal of lymph nodes is extensive (40-50!) or breast cancer (where far more surgeries are done on far more individuals) the lymphedema (swollen lymph fluid) remains in your upper torso (or anywhere for that matter, even in your neck and face) and will remain there until you get proper care..

Therefore, make sure you rule out lymphedema by seeing a invasive radiologist 1st who will have their tech do an extensive ultra sound and then read the US to rule out "thrombosis". Then, assuming no thrombosis, consult with a physical therapist (preferably a "doctorate" in PT) who also holds a C-LANA certification. The LANA certification is a must.

If it isn't drug related, the simple use of compression stockings will NOT resolve your problem. You will simply be barking up the wrong tree. A huge difference exists between edema and lymphedema. Don't confuse the two as the same; they aren't regardless of what some people think.

Hopefully, your situation is simply drug related.

No surgery or cancer involvement. Dr. suggested stronger water pill when needed, continue with exercise and compression stockings. Ecocardiagram (sp) is showing some heart issues causing circulation problems. Not the simple solution I was hoping for but also weaning off amantadine to see if that makes a difference.
