Below is a link to a post I wrote about magnesium, of which there are many forms or combinations of forms. Generally the forum members who use magnesium have their favorite forms that they swear by. Glycinate is noted for exceptional absorption, magnesium taurate and magnesium L-Threonate are noted for specifically targeting the brain more than the other forms, magnesium chloride which is available in topical and oral forms and is relatively inexpensive and very effective. Magnesium oxide is the type you are most likely to find in drug stores, but is the poorest as far as absorption. Magnesium oxide and magnesium citrate are most useful to help with constipation when used at a high enough dose.

On a related note, the topical magnesium chloride oil or mag oil as it is commonly referred to has abilities to do certain things that the oral supplements can not because it is readily absorbed through the skin and can reach local tissue levels that are not possible with the oral supplements, at least not without getting diarrhea or getting too much magnesium or both! Mag oil is useful to stop muscle cramping quickly, relieve pain in joints and muscles, relieve things like a sprained ankle, reduce inflammation & swelling and effectively relax tight muscles. It is also helpful for headaches that are due to shoulder and neck tension. Overall the mag oil spray is an excellent tool to keep in your medicine cabinet! People often mistakenly think that a high quality oral magnesium can do everything that the mag oil can do, but they can't and that is why it is a good thing to use oral as well as topical magnesium. Also you will find, there are many blends of the different forms of oral magnesium and some of these are of very good quality and can offer more versatility than some of the individual forms of magnesium. Thanks Art/chartist for all your great info again! Ive been taking magnesium L-theonate for several months now - this form doesnt cause diarrhea and had really helped with insomnia I've been sleeping 5-6 hrs straight. And how much better I feel in the morning after some quality REM sleep!

Hi jujulini...... what time(s) of the day do you take your magnesium and how many milligrams for each dose? What brand of L threonate do you use?

Thank you. My husband has been using the solgar mag with B6. I’m not sure how good it is as I can see any result.

Jumex2017,

If I found the right product when I searched, this Solgar product contains 400 mg of magnesium oxide. While it does deliver 400 mg of magnesium oxide which is the recommended amount of magnesium per day, magnesium oxide is easily one of the poorest forms for the body to absorb.

Use GoodSense Milk of Magnesia, it doesn't have the unnecessary additives that Philips MoM has. Add a drop of organic peppermint essential oil to 15 ml for taste along with 200 mg of B6, daily.

I have been taking magnesium L-theonate for almost a year. This form doesn't cause

any side effect. Just follow Art recommendations.
