NEUPRO PATCH AND EYE PROBLEMS

Hello!

I would like to ask the community if you have had eye problems with the use of NEUPRO Patch. It is listed among the side effects eyesight problems, however my mother seems to have a sudden kind of infection in one eye and we're not sure if is or if is not related to the patch. (She is been using them for a week)

Your mother needs her eyes and I wouldn't waste anytime letting her doctor know about this problem as soon as possible in case it is caused by the patch and even if it isn't caused by the patch, her eye needs immediate attention!

I searched and found a case of someone on Neupro who got an eye infection:

I would not regard this as particularly meaningful unless Neupro is giving her dry eye, in which case infection could be a consequence.

In general, dopamine agonists such as Neupro are best avoided if possible since they have been associated with devastating adverse effects.

Thank you for your link. I think it may be an allergic reaction as the "infection" seems more like three red dots (one under her eye in her cheek other in her nose and a recent one in her chest) and a little swelling... The Dr. said that we will see improvements within a week but I don't see any at all..., maybe is not for her

Hi Park Bear!

I know this is an old post, but this is the second time I have you seen you mention "devastating adverse effects"...! Prior to this, I just read on their website all the horrible effects. Do you know first hand of any of these?

I am now concerned that my dad's hallucinations are related to the patch. Starting this week, I want to start weaning him off of them, but thought I should try and sort it out with his neurologist first. He has been on a fairly high dose (16mg) for a while. I am thinking that they probably aren't even that effective for him anymore, since while on them and 2.5 tablets of 100/25 sinemet, he was freezing for 45-60-90 minutes in between each of his 2hour and 45 minute doses. Since January have switched to mucuna (thank goodness!) Still on 1 tablet of sinemet for each dose, but now doses are lasting for the 3 hours, with only 15-30 minutes of freezing, depending on what and how much he has eaten.

I did read that we can reduce it by 2grams every 24hours, though I think waiting for 72 seems safer.

Anyway, I guess I am just wondering if you have any thoughts. Thanks in advance!

You should definitely work this out with his neurologist. To go off of a dopamine agonist requires a gradual reduction of dosage over a long interval.

There is a whole laundry list of adverse effects of dopamine agonists. One set are the impulse control disorders - compulsive gambling, shopping, eating, or sex. Another serious adverse affect is orthostatic hypotension - loss of blood pressure upon standing. There are also some muscle disorders such as retrocollis.

As far as I know hallucinations are a Parkinson's phenomenon.

Super helpful, thanks Art! I think his Neupro patch is definitely contributing. It doesn't seem to do anything for him anymore anyway. Will work with doc to wean and report back.

My husband has been on the Neupro patch for a number of years. He changed from being diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia to Parkinson's after starting on the patch. The effect was dramatic. He was back to normal mentally. The side effects mentioned in one of the replies I think eludes to addictions, which can and do happen according to our neurologist. The drug is also given for restless legs. The additions are gambling and being over sexed. My husband seems to have had no side effects, certainly no eye problems. The trouble is that the drugs and the disease affect everyone differently.

Yes we had other problems....the COST even with Medicare Part D, was $600.00 and it did NOTHING.

One of my symptoms is double vision. I also suffer with ‘dry eye’, which oddly causes my eye to run. My Neuro told me these are common symptoms of Parkinson’s.
