Mannitol

A big thank you to all you Mannitol uses that made me aware of its magnificent benefits! Since January I had gone from constipation to not even being able to go to the bathroom without a laxative for roughly five months. Needless to say I was quite worried! I started taking Mannitol two teaspoons with my mucuna and green tea in each of my doses which is 3 doses throughout the course of the day. After 1 week I started moving my bowels normally! I never thought such an event would make me so happy! LOL I don't use sugar so it added a little sweetness to the mucuna green tea mix so that was an added benefit. Normal consistent bowel movements has returned! Yes I did get a tremendous amount of gas but the trade-off was worth it! I did however notice that perhaps I am getting used to it because I don't get anywhere near as much gas now. Forever grateful for the people on this site!!!

Me too! Thanks for validation!

Likewise - I take my mannitol in the evening now and so avoid what was embarrassing gas in the day. (Husband hasn't complained of excess gas while we're sleeping either!)

Can you suggest a proper source to buy the version you find you have had your success with? Thanks!

Just the powder from BulkSupplements from Amazon. Decent price and same quality (appears) from last, another brand just more $.

I'm sorry I misunderstood what you said bulk supplement I thought you were talking about some form of natural laxative other than Mannitol

No prob. BulkSupplements is the brand. Here is the link. Bulksupplements Mannitol Powder (500 Grams) amazon.com/dp/B00QXQWHLA/re...

Whilst I am a fan of Mannitol, it is an Osmotic diuretic i.e. a type of laxative, so you should be somewhat careful about taking it and make sure you are well hydrated before you take it. I find one teaspoonful a day enough for me personally, but then I am still not diagnosed (though I think I would have been had it not been for the Mannitol). There was one poster reporting a preponderance of a certain type of (bad) bacteria which feeds off Mannitol, so again this should lead to some caution.

Stevenmast profile image
Stevenmast in reply to alexask

I looked at what I wrote and realized I'm actually taking half a teaspoon three times a day. When I first started I took one teaspoon three times a day but like you I have come to learn one and a half teaspoons daily is working for me. Thank you!

It does cause frequent urgent urination too.

My husband took it for months and had increased urgency. I was worried about the corynebacterium amylatum that he had showing up in his faecal analysis as google says they are able to grow in mannitol. He has a gene SNP that our opus23 gene report says it is particularly concerning to have this SNP in conjunction with the above bacteria as it is associated with PD!

I think it helped his systems overall gradually but hard to tell with everything else he is taking too so he stopped it due to the bacteria concerns. Once he stopped it he noticed the urgency to urinate went away which was a bonus. He has been feeling much worse since stopping it ie less happy, motivated, more nauseous. That may be bacteria dying off or who knows what else. It is very hard to pinpoint cause and effect. If it is bacteria die off presumably it will level off eventually. I am tempted to put him back on it again briefly and see if he feels better again. Perhaps pulse it every other day or week about to prevent large bacteria colonies forming. Also these bacteria also feed on other sugars too so the extra tbs of mannitol might make no difference to the amount of bacteria in his gut.

Thank you! This business of treating Parkinson's naturally is quite stressing! I found something that seemingly is helping me and now I have to worry about bad bacteria! Oh brother just shoot me!

LAJ12345 profile image
LAJ12345 in reply to Stevenmast

Sorry😞. But as I said there are plenty of other sugars this bacteria eats so it could be the mannitol is irrelevant in the scheme of things if it can just go onto the next sugar. That’s what I decided anyway when I put my husband on to it originally.

But it may give the bad bacteria an edge over good ones that can’t eat it?

Stevenmast profile image
Stevenmast in reply to LAJ12345

I must admit I eat well no sugar in my diet at all! Perhaps that Mannitol does look good? Thanks for sharing! Steven

@LAJ12345 I’ve been worried about bladder weakness/urinary urgency lately.

But it seems a stretch to be related to Mannitol (different systems). So what is the science behind it? Maybe it’s an irritant of some type to the bladder lining? 2. Is there any research behind this or is it anecdotal, only? 3. Glad to hear y’all are testing FM for bacteria- it’s fascinating.

I'm not sure but his urgency totally stopped once he stopped taking it. I think it is a diuretic? Mannose has been used for urine infections. I am not sure how different Mannose and mannitol are in physical properties.

Stevenmast profile image
Stevenmast in reply to LAJ12345

I'm thinking about stopping it! I've been urinating quite frequently I didn't make the connection just added it to the list! I'll let you know if I see any changes

LAJ12345 profile image
LAJ12345 in reply to Stevenmast

Yes, we are not sure if his sudden decline has been due to stopping mannitol or something else. I am trying a few other things (coenzyme a , see my other post) first, but if nothing works he will have another go at mannitol.

Maybe the best approach if it is helping you is taking it days when you are around home, then having days off if you are out and about and don’t know where the toilet is. Or take it at night rather than morning hoping it does it’s thing then is peed out before the day begins. That might also eliminate the possibility of bacteria colonies building up if their food supply is sporadic. Taking natural fermented food like kimchi might crowd out the bad guys too.

My husband had mannitol dissolved with other vitamins in a sip bottle so he was sipping on it all day but it may be better taken as a slug all at once.

just had another thought... I wonder if by increasing frequency of urination it was washing other supplements, medications and nutrients through faster it means he might be having too much now of something now they are lingering in the digestive tract longer?

AmyLindy profile image

@stevenmast I’m stopping it in the day only for one week. Taking at night on my strawberries 🍓 With u stopping completely this week we will have covered both approaches for this loosely measured observational experiment!

Hi Amy! Just looking at old posts and was wondering what your conclusion was on taking Mannitol at night?

AmyLindy profile image

It’s a good way to take and absorb it, for sure!

Taking it at night is a great idea! My neurologist and I have decided that “keeping count” of gut bacteria 🦠 is useless - even fecal samples are transient bc the microbiome is constantly changing. I’d like to be more scientific about using Mannitol but it is a subjective measurement, regardless. Conclusion: Mannitol works for a. restoring my sense of smell And b. Restoring bowel regularity. C. I’m “testing” the urinary frequency/urgency by taking the Mannitol at night, instead of Morning this week. Curious!

I keep hearing about Mannitol helping for sense of smell but it hasn't for me. It's would be terrific if it did. Perhaps I'm not on it long enough! I do agree with the points you make. I will reply to your feeling alone tomorrow I need to start my sleep process.

I was on Mannitol for more than one year before I noticed my sense of smell returning.

i have to add that i have been taking mannitol for about one year. the best thing is the teturn of my sense of smell and taste. it is amazing how much easier it is for me to eat. i look forward to eating.

It is not connected with the sense of smell but I would like to add that drinking 1-2 tablespoon of bragg's apple cider vinegar has helped my constipation

Stevenmast profile image
Stevenmast in reply to Not4evr

Interesting what time of the day do you take it and do you mix it with anything? My experience with drinking vinegar is it is it's pretty brutal but I am willing to try again. I never thought it was used for constipation. Thanks! Do you have any sleep remedies? Melatonin doesn't seem to work for me although I might give it another whirl. Thanks again!

ParlePark in reply to Stevenmast

Re melatonin. Arts 1,2 3 suggestion helps. Sorry don’t have link. Swanson makes a sleep formula. 5mg Melatonin immediate 5 mg release controlled and valerian root included. I also use 5 mg thc pill form as well. I alternate as nothing seems to work if I use daily. I alternate. Real bad nights .25. Clonzapam but use that sparingly.

Stevenmast profile image
Stevenmast in reply to ParlePark

Thank you for your suggestions! I have tried Arts melatonin 1 2 3 because it made a lot of sense to me but not sure if it worked very well. I'm going to give that Swanson time release a try. I didn't want to become dependent on taking Xanax but it seems that's where I'm at! Perhaps I can paint a picture on my ceiling! LOL

Steven, Sleep one of my worst symptoms. My experience nothing works 2 nights in a row. So I alternate melatonin, MM 5 mg (this prob works best) Swanson, Clonzapam (.25-.5 mg). Also have different types of melatonin. Some 3 mg immediate, some 5 mg released, etc. if I go to bed early I take released , late- immediate. Every nite I get up (like now) I take 3 mg. Which helps me get back to sleep but unfortunately get small hangover in am. Also vary melatonin doses. 3-15 mg. Mix it up. Hope this helps.

Between the mucuna, playing around with my B1 dose and Mannitol I'm becoming a mad scientist! Thanks I will definitely try your ideas. Warm day in New York today I'm going to attempt to get up on my unicycle! As the saying goes, you only live once I might as well make it a little exciting and I guess you could say slightly crazy!

One more thing. Still have a hard time sleeping however is a little better than before. I take my B1 and D early in the day, recommended by my MDS.

Take 2tbsp of Bragg's ACV, add some mannitol to sweeten the taste, drop into a glass of water and viola!!! Remember to rinse your mouth afterwards as ACV can erode your teeth.

Regarding sleep, Melatonin 2mg lozenge gives me about 5hrs sleep, thanks to Allaah. Had a very tough time before with sleep going whacky. I also try to keep my circadian clock tuned up by sitting facing the rising sun.
