Does Magnesium, especially L-Threonate cancels out levadopa effect?

Hi, My PD friend has leg / foot cramp and I suggested Magnesium, but she said it cancels out levodopa (c/l).

Any suggestion please? Thanks.

I spray on magnesium chloride. In my experience does not interact with levodopa.

Cheapest way is to dissolve magnesium chloride in water and put in spay bottle.

Anecdotal chat (with a pharmacist):

“The one thing i can state with certainty is that magnesium does interact with Sinemet and it's generic product (carbidopa/levodopa). That interaction is that some antacids that contain Magnesium, Aluminium, or Calcium may increase the absorption of levodopa. The reason or mechanism to this interaction may be related to the increase of gastric Ph and/or decrease in gastric emptying time which would result in the breaking down of levodopa. All of this would result in more levodopa being absorbed from the small intestinal a greater amount being available in the blood. This may result in the dosage of levodopa having to be adjusted.”

That link also says that it is ok to take the magnesium so long as gap of 2 hours is given between them

If it enhances levodopa’s availability when taken together (requiring a lesser dosage), why would you want to interfere? Unless, of course, the referred increase in the “absorption of levodopa” takes place BEFORE crossing the BBB...

This actually sounds like nonsense doesn’t it? More is broken down so more is absorbed? I don’t understand that.

I understand that the L-theonate form of magnesium does not cause diarrhea. I have been taking it at night for the past couple of months for insomnia and have been sleeping much better.

Magnesium occurs naturally in the body and is essential for life. It regulates muscles, nerves, blood pressure and blood pressure. L -Theanine is a non protein amino acid, it increases GABA and Dopamine. This is found in green tea and black tea. Your friend is misinformed.

I think the first step is for your friend to ask for blood work to find out if she/he is Magnesium deficient; however from ages 31-51+ 420 mg daily for males and 320 mg daily for women is the Recommended daily allowance. Eating foods rich in Mg is important i.e...leafy green vegetables and legumes. There are a lot of different Magnesium supplements but Magnesium Gluconate is shown to have the highest absorption rate but has a laxative effect. Magnesium Glycinate is probably your best bet as it absorbs well and has less of a laxative effect.

Based on this study ncbi.nim.gov there's a theory that Mg deficiency is involved in the formation of Parkinsonism-Dementia complex by decreasing the lack of blood flow to the brain in rats. Mg-L-Threonate can carry the Mg through intestinal wall to the blood stream and the through the blood brain barrier. My opinion is the bottom line is that is important to find out what nutrients your body is deficient in and correct it. If your not body is not low on Mg, taking more is not going to help heal anything.

Thanks Stanzina. According to Dr Carolyn Dean about her Magnesium reasearch, her list of most people with Magnesium deficiency also has people with PD, AD etc.
