Grapefruit juice is more than a CYP3A4 inhibitor

Just found this timely article all about Grapefruit for Parkinson's, except effects on levodopa, 'cos it hasn't been tested.

Conclusion : it's good for your brain, but could be dangerous, so if in doubt, don't drink it.

Thanks for sharing this. Indeed more encouraging info about GJ and PD. No research before your own about its effect on levodopa because it’s only...GJ.

Hello Albert! I book-marked the link. Your hard work has given lots of smiles. :)

Great article. Seems like grapefruit juice has benefits on its own as well as a Mao inhibitor before taking MP. (Probably said this wrong as I'm not into the science of this but grapefruit juice 30 mins before MP allows for greater absorption of dopermine)

Hi Getz,

This article just shows how big health institutions, are quite happy to make broad recommendations that affect peoples lives without really researching the subject. This stuff is read by people who have no scientific knowledge and they swallow it whole.

In answer to your question, GJ enables more absorption, but more importantly, considerably extends the half-life so it lasts much longer. This implies that you have to reduce the dose in the long term. Have you read my other post ?

Are you still on GJ ?

Mate, after reading the article I got up and had a glass of Gj in the belief that it might minimize the effect of alpha synuclean. I really don't understand the scientific jargon but appreciate the posts. I probably do far too much and some of my supplements may compete or negate others. I am generally improving and my feet are no longer tingling constantly but have a dull awareness, Shall list my supplements and protocol and ask for your comments on it soon. Hope you don't laugh. I certainly appreciate your posts.

Thanks Osidge,

An important phrase in this article :

"there are alternatives to these médecines "

You can avoid them. !!!

wriga. I'm all over the place with my PD protocol and I'm just wondering if you may Have a comment on it; It appears to be working slowly as my feet are no longer tingling though I am aware of them. My memory is a little faulty stil but half an hour later the answer emerges.

On rising I have CoQ10, fish oil, CDP, folic acid, B6, and lithium, orotate (all from Dr Mischley's article.

I then have a couple of cups pf green tea,

Half hour later I have a smoothie of beetroot juice, banana, tsp of MP, blended with raspberries,

Some time later I have B1 (Dr Constantino) and L Theanine, Vinpocetine, Immune Booster, (mushrooms), Serapeptase enzyme, milk thistle, rhodiola, and ashwaghanda,

I will also have ALA and B12 3x daily

I also use the infra red helmet sometime in the afternoon.

Am I doing too much? Are any of these supplements competing against each other?

Getz Mate,

You haven't got a protocol, just a list.

Let's try to put some logic into this.

First of all, you have to try to optimise things in terms of timescale.

Short term > medium term > long term.

And remember a few rules.

1) Quantities matter,

2) Combinations matter,

3) Timing matters.

Short term = days. First priority.

You need enough levodopa in your system every day : at least 100-200 mg. This can be MP, Check what a teaspoon delivers in weight of levodopa. It may be less in % terms than what's on the label as natural levodopa gets easily oxidised in the processing and storage.

Combinations

to get levodopa into the blood you have to knock out 2 enzymes, DDC and CYP3A4. You need some Carbidopa to knock out DDC, not much, 2-5 mg does the job. Green tea extract works to a degree, drinking green tea is not enough. 200 ml Grapefruit juice knocks out CYP3A4. Vit B6 activates DDC, so its a bad combination unless you have Carbidopa.

Timing

Knock out the enzymes before taking the levodopa. GJ and Green tea extract before levodopa or C/L in combination as with sinemet. Levodopa or MP spread out over the day, 2-3 times.

Getz again

Medium term.

Vit B1 is thought to give energy to the mitochondria and saves unhealthy nerves. It helped me a lot in the first few months. I still take 2.5 g per day. The effects are seen in a few weeks.

Exercise. Get walking, running, swimming, dancing, It's good for the body and the morale.

Long term.

That's most of the other stuff on your list. Some may be useful, some not. You'll never know if you don't get the short term treatment optimised and stable.

Diet : eat healthy every day. Lots of fruit and vegs, not much meat, no processed food. Raw is better than cooked. You'll even get to like it.

Good luck Mate.

In addition, do you have any thoughts on low carb or even a Keto diet combined with fasting, to promote Autophagy and reduce inflammation?

wriga profile image
wriga in reply to Buckholt

My thought is that low carb is often high fruit and veg. That would be good, But it can be high fat. I've not looked into that.

I've been on a keto diet for a while. Had prostate cancer that disappeared after a keto diet though the doc didn't believe it.. Still on it years later but a different stress problem has led to PD.

Did not know B6 activates DDC. Thanks. I take my serapeptase on an empty stomach to eat away any protein (helps with cancer) so shall move it and B6 to another time. The only thing I was aware of was keeping B1 away from protein and citrus.

Thanks mate, Obviously I have to look more into this rather than just including whatever some recognized person lists. I have been on a basic keto diet with lots of raw foods and walk for an hour 3 times a week. Can only get up to 6 km in the hour though.

I appreciate your time. I'm in Nth Qld. Australia and have not been able to find an integrative PD specialist so have done my own thing.

Albert. An excellent paper. Some very profound implications and I’d like to show this to my neurologist if that’s ok with you? Striking are the support offered by the Mediterranean Diet in inhibiting CYP and the fact that effects aren’t necessarily immediate. I do have one question: should ingestion of GF be separate from a breakfast or is it ok to have these close together? Furthermore, do you have any views on a relationship between fasting and inhibition of CYP?

Many thanks and well done again😊

Just how much does one need to drink a day if freshly squeezed?

Jeeves and Jumex,

One whole Grapefruit is good, with breakfast is fine.

For newcomers, please read the texts and comments in the original thread. This is where you'll find most of the answers to your questions.

Bottom line: pending research, watch for drug nutrient interactions, & use for Prevention not Treatment

And who will do the research ?

Hi Wriga, please allow me two questions.

With your protocol using gj, can you share what your source of Levadopa is, and how you take your meals, as that affects my absorption.

I would like to say that i admire your knowledge and your patience in sharing with others. Any info you share on the above would be most appreciated.

Regards

Cary
