How best to take Mucuna Pruriens

For several months I took my Mucuna Pruriens in a breakfast smoothie with berries, eggs and probiotic milk but I started to spend increasing amounts of time trying to clear my throat.

I then changed to having it as a tea along with Green Tea and Dandelion Root but after a few weeks that too started throat clearing problems that almost made me chunder (vomit).

How else can I take it?

Kerrington I'm not allergic to anything I am aware of but will do as you suggest.

My understanding is that MP is best absorbed away from food, particularly protein. For best results, I take MP an hour before or two hours after a meal. Mornings I take MP with green tea and a product called Dopa Mind by Life Extension, a Wild Green Oat extract which has shown to be a mild MAO-B inhibitor. The phlegm in your throat issue may have to do with the dairy products you are using and not necessarily related to MP. Lately I've been cutting down on dairy, using coconut milk and switching to cheese and yoghurt from sheep or goat. Good luck and I hope this helps.

The product is called Dopa Mind from the company Life Extension. I’m not sure it does much, but I was on the MAO-B inhibitor Selegilene for about a year and I couldn’t tell much difference with that either.

I read a study somewhere that characterized Wild Green Oat extract as a "mild MAO-B inhibitor. If you try Dopa Mind, please let me know what you think. Every little bit helps, right?

Thanks reedboat2. Shall change the dairy to juices like grape (resveretrol) and beetroot (oxygenation) along with the berries and eggs and see what happens. Going to include your Dopa Mind with my morning cup of tea of green tea and dandelion root as well.

Sounds good but you might put the eggs on hold for an hour or so. Protein could interfere with absorption. Just a thought .

Reedboat2, is it ok to have a 500mg Bi tablet with a small glass of MP blended with beetroot juice?

Far as I know not much protein in beet root, but I’m no expert

George takes mucuna right after eating. He found he would get nauseated if he didn't eat first, especially the first thing in the morning. The 5-htp controls the nausea. He takes it in a capsule form, rather than powder.

I'm in my 10th year with Parkinson's and for the past 3 years I've been using mucuna extract from nutrivitashop and no other medication. My latest cocktail has given me the best relief and the longest up time! I make up three small mason jars every morning as well as a large mason jar I use for the matcha green tea. In each small jar I use 3/8 of a teaspoon of mucuna two teaspoons of mannitol and roughly 4 oz of matcha green tea also from nutrivitashop. I don't put it together until I'm ready to take it roughly every 4 hours but the third one I sometimes don't take until almost eight hours. Do not have protein at least two hours before you dose and probably longer if you're eating meat! My first dose is on an empty stomach and as soon as it kicks in roughly 30 minutes or so I'll have a light breakfast fruit perhaps a couple of eggs. So I usually have a solid 3 hours of not eating before I take my dose. At night after my mucuna kicks in I enjoy a healthy large dinner. I don't eat meat I don't do dairy! Vegetables, fish, eggs. Oh yes how could I forget vitamin B1 along with the first two doses I take 1000 milligrams 2 times a day. About 3 weeks ago I started using Mannitol the added sweetness helps with the mucuna face and has helped my clarity and up time. I have the forum to thank for the B1 and Mannitol my new friend! I’m 4.5 years, no meds also using Mucuna. Took up meditation (Dr. Joe Dispenza) and have had huge benefits. Meditation has repaired or enhanced what B1 did not. B1 corrected and eliminated non-motor symptoms while meditation has corrected/relieved motor symptoms.

The mucuna I have been using helps with all my motor symptoms. For me vitamin B1 has been extremely helpful with both motor and non-motor symptoms.. I can still get up on a unicycle and ride it a couple hundred yards. If I had a better one probably much longer. The good news is I have not increased my dose since I've started and I hope and pray it continues to work for me. Positive thinking is where I try to keep my thoughts it's not easy! Constance, I'm so sorry I misunderstood your response I didn't have my glasses on and I thought the word meditation was medication. I think meditation would be a wonderful addition to what I am doing now. Thank you!

You can learn a lot about Dr Joe Dispenza from YouTube or sign up for his in home Progressive Workshop which is fabulous. For $299.00 dollars you get 25 hours of lessons and training. The science part is so interesting. He’s gotten so popular during the past few years it’s almost impossible to get into his events.

Wish I could get my husband to eat as healthily as you. He's been diagnosed 14 years but at the moment is struggling with pain for which he's going in for a spinal op next month. He's presently on Tramadol, morphine & Gabapentin 🙁 So PD has taken a back seat but his diet is atrocious - too much diary, red meat, gluten & sugar, he also doesn't like veggies or salad much! The only good thing I've managed to get him on is 1 cup of matcha green tea a day plus all the supplements I give him such as HDT, mannitol, celery seed extract, probiotic, omega 3 fish oil, turmeric, vinpocetine, etc.

He's very lucky to have you! I am married but I am fighting this battle alone, sadly! You have to do the things you can control like eating proper food. Have you tried making some green smoothies for him? You do need a good blender like a Vitamix but for a long time part of my daily routine was one small apple core removed one small banana ripe and two or three large handfuls of spinach all organic! 15 oz of water.a little ice and blend thoroughly. You should get one full mason jar about 32 oz. The apple and banana make it sweet that's a good way to start taking in some leafy greens. Start with that then start changing the greens around for variety that's key! There are wonderful nut milks available today unsweetened that are much better for you! If he must use sugar use something like stevia again a better choice then processed sugar! If you make smoothies don't make the mistake a lot of people do by putting in too much fruit there by getting too many calories.IMO it is all mental but for things to change he must change! Good luck at least it's a start to getting some greens into his body. Steven

Yes, I've tried him on green smoothies (which I adore) but he just complained all the time, said he didn't like the taste & wanted strawberry, melon, pineapple, banana etc! Consequently I stopped making smoothies for him.

I always have almond milk in the fridge but Glen only has cows milk.

I have Stevia in the cupboard but don't use it in his tea or coffee as I put mannitol in those. His high sugar intake is due to biscuits, chocolate & ice cream! 😕

Thanks for the suggestion. I can't do the green tea but I tried it with coconut milk and it was quite tasty. I also added lions mane. Should there be a problem with that?

Caffeine is effective with opening up the blood-brain barrier I've always found coffee to be my second choice

I don't use lion's mane can't help you there but I do think coffee would help the mucuna cross the blood-brain barrier better than coconut milk. You can use the coconut milk in your coffee

Hello! I’m totally impressed with how you take care of yourself (alone😔)

I have 3 questions, pls. First, I want to make sure that I’ll be getting the same mucuna that you are taking. Is it the L-Dopa from Nutrivitashop? Second, you said that you been taking it I guess for over 3 yrs now. Any side effects? Hallucinations? My husband is in advance stage of PD (12 yrs) and started freezing 4 months ago, during off period. Our precious daughter had read and got her Dad to take Mucuna. My husband started taking it about a month ago. It was a God sent, amazing natural medication.

Thirdly, are you completely off the PD drugs? Looking forward to hear from you. Thank you! Great job!👍🏽

Yes, that's the right mucuna. The only side effects I get is nauseousness but not all the time and it usually last about 20 minutes. Since I started mucuna I don't take any other meds. I do take Mannitol with my first dose in coffee. I also take B1. Twice a day 1000 milligrams each dose with my first two doses of mucuna 10 in the morning and the second one at 2.

I have tried taking Mucana on an empty stomach but get very nauseous and throw up at times. So I’ve found that I can eat something and take it an hour or two later and get better results. I will usually take it with green tea or just dissolved in water.

So half an hour before taking MP you should take a beta blocker such as grapefruit juice and then you should avoid taking MP with protein such as eggs. Breakfast has now extended to an hour and a half. I'm willing to try anything so long as it works. First thing in morning a glass of grapefruit juice (beta blocker) with a spoon of L-Serine to boost neurogenesis). Half an hour later a smoothie or tea with MP. Then half an hour later the breakfast smoothie with all the nutritional stuff for the day: eggs, chlorella, spirolina, collagen, beetroot juice and pomegranate juice. Certainly worth a try.

Not real sure Ernie. I seem to be on a plateau, perhaps slightly better but not sure. I've just posted about whole coffee fruit concentrate which has shown to improve BDNF by 143% and I'm hoping that will be the magic bullet though it won't restore memory cells that have been lost.

We usually eat oatmeal for breakfast every day in cooler weather. Can I put the MP in that? Or decaf coffee?

Hi Jocelyng, that is a great idea and after reading the benefits of oats I have started taking a couple of spoons of MP with oat muesli. That way I can still have an egg in my smoothie half an hour later.
