How to Determine Adenosylcobalamin Deficiency

High levels of Methylmalonic Acid (MMA) in the blood or the urine reflect inadequate adenosylcobalamin levels. One study found people with reported MMA levels of .27 micromoles per liter or higher (.26 or above indicates B-12 deficiency) may show higher homocysteine levels, while those at .60 may suffer from neurological issues.[1, 2] Testing for MMA will reveal whether the body is adenosylcobalamin deficient.

4. Supplementing With Adenosylcobalamin

Although it’s a natural and essential form of B-12, adenosylcobalamin is not stable in a pill form (unlike cyanocobalamin) so it’s not commonly used in B-12 supplements unless it’s a liquid formulation. VeganSafe™ B-12 is a liquid B-12 supplement I developed that combines the coenzyme forms of methylcobalamin and adenosylcobalamin. It’s absolutely ideal for getting your daily requirements of B-12 and perfect for those with an increased risk of B-12 deficiency, especially older adults, vegetarians,

I want to try this type of b12, since I read an article on here on this form of B12. I found $17 under your tongue melts, on Amazon, and this vegan B12 liquid from Global Healing $40, very expensive, I'd rather not spend that much, but if what this Dr. Said is true, what do you do!! What has been your experience with this type of b12 in pill form.

It is only 20% adenosylcobalamin.

This party has a vested interest in stating the pill form is not stable. No evidence provided for that claim. Not buying it.

Yes, sound fishy, thanks for input.

I trust Dr. Ben Lynch who has a number of B12's including adenosylcobalamin on his website seekinghealth.com/collectio...

Good find. The only source that has got straight unadulterated adenosylcobalamin.

Take note that your link has Adeno B12 size 3 packs. I would rather buy 1 pack and see if it works for you.

B12 is a complicated vitamin and according to someone quoting Dr. Amy Yasko " the most well tolerated active form of B12 for folks seems to be hydroxocobalamin. Every single one of the genetic combinations she lists should be able to tolerate B12 in the form of hydroxocobalamin. This is why our methylation protocol suggests hydroxocobalamin as the B12 form to begin with."

Here is the link to the website:

methyl-life.com/mthfr-what-...

Also, "Dr. Amy Yasko and Nutritionist Cynthia Smith, both suggests you can consider taking low dose lithium orotate (Cynthia Smith suggests approximately 4.6 mg pulsed a couple times a week before adding the B12 form in that’s most likely best for you)."

Lithium is used by B12 for intracellular transport and if you start taking big doses of B12 you may get depleted of lithium which is needed for neurprotection.

Are you taking Hydroxycobalmin and Lithium Orotate?

faridaro profile image
faridaro in reply to Kia17

Yes, I am taking both, not every day though, but a few times a week.

Please can you share your experiences of taking them including the dosage?

I take 2000 mcg Hydroxo B12 and Lithium orotate 20mg about 2-3 times/week or whenever I feel out of energy - it gives me a little boost as I have tendency to feel tired.

Why not a combination of Hydro and Adeno?

faridaro profile image
faridaro in reply to Despe

Good question! Actually I've been thinking about it but when I see on Seeking Health website that HydroxoB12 is the best seller and has more reviews than other types of B12 - that factor and also the fact that hydroxocobalamin has been isolated in 1949 and has good safety record makes me more favorable to it, but I could be wrong.

Also, I came across the following piece of information on some european website: "hydroxycobalamin also binds with nitric oxide (NO), therefore reducing nitrosative stress – believed to be the cause of many diseases. Research is currently being conducted into the connections between nitrosative stress and diseases, such as: autoimmune diseases, neurodermatitis, psoriasis, asthma, heart attack, stroke, dementia, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and cancer."

Would very much appreciate others comments on this topic as I am not really sure which type is the best.

I don't know either. Our Functional Medicine doctor put my husband on methylcobalamin. I didn't know about the other types of B12. I will ask Dr. Mischley. Both though adeno and hydro seem to be very good. That's why I asked why not a combination of both.

faridaro profile image
faridaro in reply to Despe

Please let me know which kind Dr. Mischley suggests.

Based on what I read, I believe the combo I questioned is the best B12. I will let Dr. Mischley know that my husband started this combination (Adeno/Methyl) B12.

Don't know where you ordered it from, but Amazon has plenty.

The forms I was able to find on Amazon were not pure adenocobalamin which is what I want.

I ordered from: seekinghealth.com/collectio...
