# PPH aftereffects : weakened motility, gastroparesis, stool softener: postprandial hypotension

## I often eat supper in bed, because I won't have far to go when the episode of cerebral hypotension returns with its vengeance. However, eating in bed increases the likelihood of worsening motility.

## When a recent meal or several become entrapped within the intestine, then a stool softener can be handy.

## As the incompletely digested food resumes being processed, an "echo" episode may and often ensues.

## As other PPH writers have observed, a bowel movement can prompt an episode of cerebral hypotension. For me, this has occurred when I've eaten too much and the intestinal tissues are barely functioning - if at all.

Parkinson's dries out my G.I. tract from one end to the other, so Docusate sodium stool softener is part of my regular routine.

How many times per week do you use sodium docusate? What strength?

I take 2, 8.6 mg tabs twice a day, which is helpful, but doesn't solve the problem for me.

I have been taking one red capsule (100 mg) now and then.

I don't like taking one two days in a row and may seek a second and milder ( ie, <100 mg) stool softener. MgOrotate? Other?

I take 250 mg twice a day. No adverse effects.

What amount of water do you ingest for the docusate sodium?

I drink to satisfy thirst and do not pay special attention.

Whoops. My docusate dose is 50 mg & 8.6 sennosides

Is that 50mg twice per day or total?

Each bill is 50 mg docusate and 8.6 mg senna and I take 2 in the morning and 2 at night

Unfortunately, I have had those problems, too. My doctor adjusted my blood pressure medication, which helped the hypotension, and he had me get stool softener, which I take, when needed. My whole digestive system, which includes swallowing, has slowed down a bit, and I'm careful with portion control, am on a Mediterranean diet, drink plenty of liquids each day, and, eat slowly. My autonomic system is involved now, with the PD symptoms, and I have problems with numbness, peripheral neuropathy, in both hands, and both feet, in addition to the GI track problems.

Thanks to all who have shared in this topic: a glimpse into seldom discussed aspects of advanced Parkinson's.
