The Fortune article concerns L-serine and its protective role against β-Methylamino-L-alanine (BMAA) induced toxicity. BMAA exposure is a risk factor for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). BMAA is an algae-derived neurotoxin than can increase in concentration up the food chain via biomagnification. Shark cartilage supplements have been found to be contaminated with BMAA.

The Fortune article states that BMAA is found in the brains of Alzheimer's patients, but this study reports this is not the case:

β-methylamino-L-alanine (BMAA) is not found in the brains of patients with confirmed Alzheimer’s disease

The fact that therapies targeting beta amyloid have so far not been successful is not proof that beta amyloid does not play a causative role in development of AD. It bears pointing out that Downs Syndrome patients have a very high risk of developing AD; people with Downs have an extra copy of the amyloid precursor protein gene.

More on the amyloid hypothesis:

Good article. L-Serine is worth a look.
