Hi everyone, my husband has started to choke when he takes his medication. Does this happen to anyone else?

I think he will have to have his sinemet tablets crushed now.

Having difficulty with swallowing is a well known symptom of Parkinson’s disease. It’s not to late to try the high dose thiamine hcl for him. I have personally had great success with it. Almost all my symptoms are alleviated.

I like mannp's idea, but you can get Sinemet ODT (orally dissolving tablets). Ask your doctor and/ or pharmacist. They taste kind of minty.

Be aware you cannot crush most controlled release / timed release formulations of levodopa.

If it is a timed or delayed release medication, some people with pill swallowing issues have reported that they are able to swallow pills by taking it with a teaspoon of apple sauce, yogurt, mashed potatoes, cottage cheese or similar. If those are not possible, here are some other ideas :

Some people find that B-1 / HDT has improved their ability to swallow and may be worth considering, given the other potential benefits of HDT in PWPs.

"choking" is a very common PD phenomenon. While participating in a PD swallowing trial I Iearned there is a proper way of swallowing and that is to take a full breath and swallow while exhaling.. Every time a pill has gotten stuck in my throat I take water and swallow in the new way on the exhale... It works for me.

My husband has the same difficulty. He has found this method that works for him. He folds his tablet into a quarter slice of white bread so it's like a small sandwich. He chews it till it is a smooth gel like texture, then he swallows it. The reason for white bread is because of it's lack of seeds etc that may catch in his throat.
