thank you for sharing this. How can I find out more about the benefits of different kinds of sprouts for PD?

Hello Redginger. I don't know how to get more information about other suits of sprouts for PD apart from googling the question. I was alerted to the benefits of Faba bean sprouts by this article.

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articl...

I would think most sprouts would be beneficial to health.

Jeanette, Thank you for the link. The article was very interesting. Sounds like they tested green peas and green beans but these did not give the L-dopa and C-dopa that Fava did; is that the way you understood it? Perhaps I should seek out some Fava beans. I have gotten them once years ago, but they aren't easily found here.

Jeanette, I've found "naturally blanched skinless" fava beans; they wouldn't work, would they?

jeanette2372 profile image
jeanette2372

No they wouldn't germinate. And yes our interpretation of the article is the same. I hope you can find some whole dried Faba (fava) beans where you live. I don't know if the place I ordered them from would send internationally. Where do you live?

I have contacted the place where I get my Faba beans, but they only post within Australia. I hope you can source some.

Here's an Amazon link for organic fava beans. There are several sources if you search Google. Only dried beans will sprout.

So can we sprout them indoors over winter?

jeanette2372 profile image
jeanette2372 in reply to AmyLindy

Yes. They would probably sprout more slowly if the temperature is very cold. I have always sprouted mine indoors. We live in South Australia in a temperate climate.

No, unfortunately they only sell within Australia. There was a comment in this thread suggesting Amazon. Maybe you could get some through them? Good luck! 🙂

Hi Jeanette! You are so thoughtful and generous to share the diet, tips and recipes that help your husband’s Parkinson’s. I’ve enjoyed reading the things you’ve written. Thank you! I’m very curious about the faba beans, are they the same as fava beans?

Thank you! I am going to look into getting some for sprouting, maybe to grow in the garden. How is your husband doing, it was an dated post I replied to? I hope to hear good news!😊

Hi. Yes, that was an old post, and my husband discontinued the bean sprouts after a year or so, as he felt that they gave him wind, which makes sense. The big thing that we are doing now is using the redlight duo coronet twice daily. I don't know if you've heard of that, but it has made an enormous difference to my husband. This is a really good video to the subject....youtu.be/RscgHLusImc

I have looked into the red hats and am intrigued. The cost has kept me from trying one yet. What benefits has your husband experienced from it?For a few years now I have used mucuna bean powder, which is also called velvet bean. It's a natural source of l-dopa and works well for me. Like the fava beans your husband used, it works like the yellow pill. I still take 3 yellow pills a day, plus take a few doses of mucuna, away from the pills. I'mthinking the beans are closely related and have the same benefit? Fava bean seeds would be relatively easy to access, and grow your own. Mucuna comes from India and other places, I've not seen it here in seed form, plus the plants have prickly hairs on them making them a challenge to harvest.

Hi. Good on you for trying natural adjunctive therapy. It's worth the effort I believe. Regarding my husband the red light benefits for him are....Return in full of sense of smell.

Improved fine motor control including handwriting back to what it was pre-PD.

Improved balance.

Incredible change in motivation and enjoyment of life, back to working in his workshop, fixing things, creating things.

Improved sleep.

There may be things I have forgotten, but the difference is life-changing for both of us.

I can't recommend the duo coronet too highly, if you can afford it, I would.

Wow Jeanette, that is amazing! What a blessing that must be for both of you. How long did he use it before starting to see changes? How often, and for what duration? I research a lot of things and forget some of those things sometimes, but if I remember right there was a red hat plus another contraption with a tiny light that you put into a nostril because that placement puts it very close to your brain, which helps the overall results. I didn't watch the entire video yet, but I will watch it in it's entirety soon. Maybe that extra piece is there? I think I might be giving more serious thought to getting one after hearing of your husbands wonderful success! I know we are all different but there has been a lot of positive feedback on HU regarding the red hats.Your husband is so fortunate to have you as his wife and caretaker, that can't be an easy job. I admire your stealth and dedication to helping him. I'm so grateful for you sharing all of this as well!

Hi, my husband started with the cheaper less comfortable option of the men's shed bucket hat. He used it for 12 minutes red light, followed by 12 minutes near infra red light every evening while he watched the news. After about two weeks he noticed his sense of smell starting to return, and it just kept getting better as time went on and he continued to use the light hat. After another month or so, we could see improvement in his handwriting. That's when we ordered the duo coronet as we could see that therapy does slowly make a difference as long as you keep doing it. The duo coronet is more comfortable and convenient, and my husband kept using it every night while he watched the news. The duo coronet is automatically timed when you turn it on to emit red light for 12 minutes, then switches to near infra red light for another 12 minutes, then it automatically turns off. That makes it very easy to use, not to worry about setting timers. Eventually he started using the helmet while he ate breakfast each day, so then he was doing two sessions a day, I would estimate for the last six months. Around that time we also bought a therapad from the same website, and he uses that on his abdomen for a 20 minute session every night when he gets into bed. That is supposed to improve the gut microbiome. So with all that my husband has improved substantially as at this time. He is up every morning, he feels better, he looks better, his sense of smell is as good as mine, he writes and draws well, he sleeps better, he is less tired, less affected by hot or cold weather extremes, and he has a wonderful positive attitude. He still takes his medication at the same rate as oreviously, he still has the Parkinson's posture, though I don't believe it's as bad as it was, but there is a huge leap forward in quality of life. I'm attaching a link for further reading if you are interested.

Hi again,I just did some research and the unit I was looking at before is from Vielight company from Canada. It is considerably more expensive than the coronet duo made in AU. It does have an intranasal component. It looks like there are long shipping delays from AU also.

Hi again. I wish you all the best whichever unit you decide to go with. It's lovely to have hope, isn't it? Regards, Jeanette
