Dreams PLUS Parkinson's, You Could Be at Risk for Dementia

"If You Have These Types of Dreams, You Could Be at Risk for Dementia.

Whether or not you tend to remember your dreams, everyone can recall that most terrifying nightmare. Maybe you were being chased by someone or something. Or you were late for a big exam. Or all your teeth fell out. Whatever it was, you probably woke up in a panic, only to realize (with enormous relief) that it was just a dream. But if you tend to have scary dreams often—and, even more telling, if you frequently scream, kick, or thrash around in your sleep—your brain could be at risk. Don’t let these 13 bizarre facts about dreams keep you up at night."

"Frequent nightmares could be caused by REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD), a condition that causes patients to physically act out violent dreams. Researchers have found that more than 80 percent of RBD patients eventually develop a neurological disease, such as Parkinson’s or dementia. Learn the 16 habits that increase your dementia risk."

What purpose

Is anything gained by knowing that you may be a candidate for dementia?

Other than the level of worry

Why publish that ?

Does it give one a better opportunity to treat it the sooner you know ?

I believe the answer to the last question is NO.

Still, the underlying research is interesting.

Here is a more sober presentation of the information:

Oh thats the purpose, to have an opportunity to push that miracle agent Thiamine and the witch doctor .

I have REM Sleep Behabiour Disorder and the body movement during REM sleep is controlled by taking 1mg clonazepam at night. My PD has got no worse since diagnosis 10 years ago.

Good for you. 10 years of stability. Can you elaborate some, i.e., do you take other things? Do you attribute your not progressing entirely to clonazepam? Do you have any guesses as to why it might stop progression?

in reply to MBAnderson

For the last 9 years I have taken Stalevo50 3 times a day.

I have REM sleep disorder and I take Remeron (mostly to keep me in bed and from acting out my dreams). Been working pretty well until this week when I did get out of bed while still dreaming. Crazy stuff...and I agree, I don't really need to know I'll likely get dementia too.

I've been married to my husband for 58 years and I discovered on our honeymoon that he had REM sleep disorder, though I didn't know at the time that was a "disorder."(just was unpleasant to be kicked and hit and have my pillow swiped out from under my head while he was sleeping.) He was diagnosed with Parkinson's around 10 years ago. He is quite forgetful, but I don't believe he has bad dementia. He can still play chess and win. He will be 80 in September.
