Why do they give MRI scans before diagnosing Parkinsons? I believed I was given one to rule out a brain tumour. Does it tell you anything related to PD?

I don't know about PD. A DatScan does that, but I do know that an MRI will show (as time passes) the "hummingbird" that often shows with PSP. I think the first time an MRI is given is to spot tumors, but not positive.

It’s to rule out other things

There are many other things can be differentiated including Parkinsonian syndrom due to hypoxia or Carbon Monoxide poisoning , brain anatomy integrity. Even brain MRI scan could verify the Parkinson’s disease since there will be some changes of some parts of the brain in PD. However the main imaging tool to diagnose the PD is the DatScan.

There are different types of MRI that I am only aware of. You can be unlucky enough to have both PD and other brain diseases or the second, or even third brain disorder.

An MRI also would show a mini stroke.

My first MRI was to rule out tumor, stroke or MS, but not to confirm PD.

I believe it is given to rule out other causes of the Parkinson symptoms (stroke).

There is research going on here in UK to see if the MRI scan can give as reliable a result in diagnosing PD as the Datscan. This would be a great addition to the diagnosis process as MRI scans are more readily available and also much cheaper.

Probably not- DAT scan is next but still is not 💯 % predictive/ diagnostic (so why bother, is my position).
