Help for a newbie … please

Hi, I'm a reasonably fit 70 year old living alone in Nth Queensland Australia. I have noticed a tremor in my right hand that is making writing difficult and so have been searching the internet for information. I only found this site yesterday though I found a reference to thiamine and Dr Constantino a couple of weeks ago.

Can anyone help with a simple protocol for treatment that has worked for them

Also you never mentioned seeing a doctor or neuro , its important to have proper diagnosis by a neuro. There may be false positives. Tremor doesn't automatically mean Parkinson

I've seen my local GP of course and he simply referred me to a neurologist. As I'm a pensioner I am on the waiting list so in the meantime I am researching as much as possible. I had a similar thing with Prostate Cancer 10 years ago and the specialist who found the cancer said the cancer was small so I had a couple of years to decide whether to have surgery, chemo, or radiation. I researched and altered my diet and took supplements and the PSA went down to normal. I did not go for another biopsy but the local GP assumed the cancer was no longer a threat. I'm just waiting for a more reliable blood, saliva, or urine test as I don't like being fiddled with for no reason.

Research is what you need to do, but the sooner you get a diagnosis the better. I feel, and I have read, that strenuous exercise as soon as possible will help slow the progression and for some it will help improve symptoms. Not cure, but improve.

Welcome! Is your tremor a resting tremor, that is there when your hand is just down, at ease, or is it an essential tremor, where your hand shakes only when you move it? If it's resting, a neurologist would need to evaluate, and see if it was possibly PD. In the meantime, exercise and good nutrition is important to maintain.

For diet I have been on the ketogenic diet for a couple of years. The tremor makes writing difficult, and I also have to drink my latte with my left hand as the tremors in my right shake the glass so much and I am too much of a tight arse to spill any. Thanks for your input.

The fact that you're on a keto diet complicates self-diagnosis. If I were you I'd start by eliminating keto as a cause of your shaking first. Fiber is necessary to slow down digestion and it can cause glucose dips and spikes if you don't have enough of it (fiber). Or, if you're underweight and don't have enough body fat, that can cause, basically starvation symptoms. Also, you have to be sure that you're balancing your electrolytes (salts) and hydrate like mad. Some say that it can make your body acidic and damage your liver long-term. I'm not an expert, and maybe you know more than I do, but I've investigated it enough - and have seen posts by people on it - to know that it's tricky to stay on keto long term.

Good luck!

Thanks Jas9. When I say keto I don't me no carbs, I mean no sugars though there are some natural sugars that are fine eg maple syrup and honey. I did discover on the site nutritiondataself.com that there are some carbs that have no sugars but are full of dietary fibre which is essential for our digestion and our probiotics. An example is asparagus, and some veges such as taro have very low carbs and high dietary fibre. I also try to eat alkaline foods and take half a teaspoon of bicarb in a glass of water probably 3 or 4 times daily though I do acknowledge I don't drink enough water. I thank you for your comments as they have reminded me particularly of the importance of hydration.

There are lots of other symptoms too if you search for Parkinson’s symptoms. If you don’t have many of them it might not be PD but it doesn’t hurt to change your diet and start exercising whatever it is!
