Sleep supplement?

Stevenmast profile image
31 Replies

Hi everybody I thought I'd ask. Over the last year or so I've been taking 1 mg Xanax to help me sleep. I recently weaned myself off because I just didn't want to take it long term. Now I can't sleep 4 hours at Best. You all know how bad PD is if we don't sleep. Can anybody recommend a natural supplement for sleeping?

500 mg magnesium threonate + 200mg L-theanine + 250 baicalin + 400mg full Spectrum skullcap.

I'd wait until Xanax is cleared from your system.

I took xanax, a small dose for several years to sleep. I never got addicted and had no trouble stopping it. I stopped only because my new GP didn't want to prescribe it.My internist saw no trouble prescribing it, but i had to change insurance plans.

I alternate between melatonin and mirtazapine. Dosage is important with the former I found. 8/10 mg is what I need and anything less wont work.

I've been taking a half pill of Xanax for a couple of years now, and added 9 mg of melatonin per my neurologist recently. I get about 8 hours of sleep each night, with about 4-6 of solid hours. I've cut back on the Xanax and the melatonin seems to really help.

Is that a Time released melatonin?

Valerian root works for me. Is a nonprescription supplement. Capsules have a bad smell but not after you get it down.

park_bear,

I have tried valerian root and unfortunately it did not work for me. I was just wondering how you get past the smell of it? To me it smells so bad that I have to hold my breath when I open the bottle and try not to breathe as I bring the capsule to my mouth!

I have had better luck with gaba, 5htp, baking soda and melatonin, but high THC/ MM is the best of the bunch for me. What I don't like about MM is that it seems to be mildly addictive in the sense that it is harder to get to sleep without it.

I have also tried lemon balm and lavender, both of which were not helpful for me, even when I added valerian thinking that a combination of the three would be helpful, it wasn't.

Yes, I too avoid breathing the odor of valerian root.

I cannot take melatonin because it causes me diarrhea. Just goes to show different we all are.

I think I should add a little more info about using MM as a sleep aid. I mentioned that it seems slightly addictive to me and it also seems to require more the longer I use it in a row. What I have found is that if I use it every night, I tend to become dependent on it as in I expect to use it each night, but when I stop abruptly, I am lucky to get 2 or 3 hours of sleep for a few days in a row. When I have not used it for a week or more, it seems to require less to obtain the desired effect and also seems to be more effective than when I use it every night. So in conclusion, for me, I would say that it is best if I use it only once in awhile when I want to get a full nights sleep!

@hidden Thank you for that caution- very timely, & first I’ve heard.

As for me: I stick w Melatonin 5,10,12 mg/n, Maybe some CBD oil (testing), & a boring book called The Dancing 🐝 Bees - an old classic beekeeping manual of sorts!

I think you're onto something with that beekeeping manual! LOL

I took 1/2 of a .25 mg each night. I have some left and still take that if I am going to be out of town, or so forth. I am 76 and weigh 148 pounds if that is of any help. My old age didn't make me addicted either. I also took a melatonin then and still do now.

Night Time cold medicine makes one sleepy too.

I started taking phosphatidylserine (300 mg a day) about three weeks ago and it seems to help. An article on Science of Parkinson's suggested that it is an amino acid that is reduced in PD and it helps support sleep.

Lavender oil, Mg-threonate (Magtein) and low dose melatonin helped me a great deal. I also use meditation late at night.

I agree that L-theanine can also be beneficial.
