Insulin resistance (IR) is a pathological condition in which cells fail to respond normally to the hormone insulin. The body produces insulin when glucose starts to be released into the bloodstream from the digestion of carbohydrates (primarily) in the diet.

The first drug that can slow the course of Parkinson’s?

As Professor Tom Foltynie who led the study says, these findings offer hope that exenatide can actually slow the course of Parkinson’s:

“This is a very promising finding, as the drug holds potential to affect the course of the disease itself, and not merely the symptoms.

“With existing treatments, we can relieve most of the symptoms for some years, but the disease continues to worsen.

“This is the strongest evidence we have so far that a drug could do more than provide symptom relief for Parkinson’s disease.”

Thank you, Kia. Insulin resistance also gives rise to diabetes type II and thence to Alzheimer's, one version of which is now called diabetes type III. Dr Perlmutter sees the ketogenic diet as helpful because in the system's inability to get blood sugar to the brain through resistance to insulin, fat can act as an alternative fuel. My husband had both Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. Different parts of the brain are involved but there seems to be some connection, don't you think?

Hi M1tz1

Alzheimer and PD are both neurodegenerative diseases and are connected to each other pathologies one way another and both can be as a result of insulin resistance in our body as you have described.I truly believe that the Ketogenic diet can substantially improve the PD symptoms and delay the disease progression.I tried the diet once for few weeks just unable to maintain that but it was an amazing experience.

And guess what? high dose Thiamine is used to treat some forms of diabetes

That was a helpful post.

It seems to follow that a high fat, low carb diet (which can fix type 2 diabetes) might also help Parkinsons patients

Just wanted to give a boost to this post because of the insulin resistance importance.
