Nocturia ..

Since last year, my frequent urination at night has become more and more disturbing. Micturition 3 or more times a night literally spoils my already poor sleep quality.

For some reasons, production of urine during sleep is markedly increased in PD patients, while it is reduced in individuals without PD.

Any suggestions ?

It is not the production of urine it is the effect of PD on your bladder, causing urgency. Also it my be due to your prostrate. Try Saw Palmetto or ask your doctor to prescribe something for urinary urgency.

Be careful! Drugs that calm the bladder also run the risk of cognitive decline and dementia. My gynecologist, primary physician and even my neurologist (she should know better) suggested Detrol. I used it over the years mainly on trips. ( A&Cshows). I also per buckets 5+ trips and it really does ruin sleep. So now I have been working on Constipation which seems to make me "go" more often. Changed magnesium to two capsule containing cheats Malate and citrate and trying a different probiotic and did find out that Isradipine 5 mg (Calcium Channel blocker) that I took each am may cause Constipation. Doc switched me to Toprol CL generic 25 mg daily and YES No More Constipation = less urination for me anyway. Hope this helps. Did anyone see Jimmy Choi last night on Ninja Warrior? Team Fox there to cheer him on!

This consideration applies only to anticholinergic drugs. Saw palmetto is anti-inflammatory and as such does not cause that kind of problem.

On the subject of not having to visit the bathroom overnight I found that avoiding liquids as much as possible for two hours before bed helps immensely.

I am no doctor or scientist but I have an idea that the conscious brain is not switching off properly and the bladder continues to fill up,as if we are awake. I sometimes go as much as eight times a night but on average it is three or four. Sometimes I get a full night sleep, and that only happens very rarely.

Thanks a lot for all the helpful suggestions. I'll benefit.

By the way, I've just learned that melatonin could also help, by decreasing urine volume during sleep. Another option is desmopressin nasal spray. But which carries some serious risks.

As a non-invasive approach, you can try grapefruit juice or half a fresh grapefruit. One caveat is that it should not be taken near most medications as it can potentially affect absorption. The grapefruit has other health benefits, but this is the one we are discussing.

Thanks easilly. This is good advice. I am going to try tonight. But what exactly does grapefruit juice do on the bladder ?

in reply to MehmetKutlu

Well, if you believe common comments on the web, here is a description that attempts to explain it:

Grapefruit Juice - Loaded with antioxidants, grapefruit contains enzymes that help provide relief from the signs of nocturia. Grapefruit moreover helps remove toxins from our body, and hence, is also overall great for our health. You may drink grapefruit juice regularly as it is also a powerful antioxidant.

Please let us know how you do!
