Solution for Constant Drooling

My husband 86 years old has had PD for 9 years. Now he is drooling involuntarily from his mouth very frequently & though he keeps a small towel napkin with him, the whole house is messed up. Has any one else experienced this? Would be very grateful for possible solutions. Many thanks

My husband and others I know have a drop of atropine eye drops on the tongue every morning which helps with this. I understand Botox treatment may also help, but have no experience of this.

My husband has advanced Parkinson's and has had this problem,I have found that it can be caused by other medications

I.e. Memantine and other drugs used for dementia.

All he has to do is regularly swallow. It no longer works automatically with Pd.

Your neurologist can give you a botox injection in the cheek -this has to be repeated after a certain number of months. It stops the drooling.

Thank you dear friends - what I have gathered from all your comments is that we could try - atropine eye drops & heavy dose of Vitamin D3. Will there be any negative effects of them? I will report to you after using them for a few days.

The best & simplest advice ofcourse is to relearn to swallow & walking with the head up - but when I tell my husband to do this he grumbles that I am nagging!

We have tried Botox injections - it only brought short term benefits.

Chewing gum & sweets - he is using but they give only short term results.

Cloves - sometimes give a hurt feeling in the tongue.

Many thanks for a quick response!

Hi, our son Martin has PD and also suffers learning difficulties which makes some medication regimes difficult to employ. He started drooling some 6 years into PD and has been prescribed Hyoscine patches. These are small circular patches applied behind the ear every 3 days or so and have been very effective. They are a known form of travel sickness prevention and should be easily available from your pharmacy.

Good luck.
