How to treat increased level of homocysteine while on levodopa treatment

Normally doctors recommend treating with high dose of B12, B6 and Folate. Unfortunately one or more of these vitamins shortens the metabolism time for Levodopa thereby increasing the off period. How do we fix the problem ?

Synbiotics will significantly lower hsCRP and will likely be beneficial for some PD symptoms.

What are symbiotics?

in reply to kaleiann

Synbiotics are probiotics that already have a prebiotic in the capsule. They will significantly raise glutathione and lower hsCRP, two important things that PWPs need!

Hi, what are the brand names of what you are taking? And how much? Thanks

in reply to parkie13

That information about probiotics is based on multiple human studies using different types of synbiotics which can also lower inflammatory levels among many other health benefits.

I use a product which has a prebiotic in it, but I also take xylitol as a prebiotic in a larger amount, much like mannitol which is also a prebiotic. It is called Epic Pro 25-Strain Probiotic. This is what is in it:

Very impressive list of probiotics! However, you have to be careful with FOS and avoid using it long term since FOS can feed both beneficial and opportunistic bacteria like klebsiella, e.coli, and clostridium according to some sources. It's also not recommended for people with yeast infection as it can feed candida as well.

Yes, FOS and GOS are probably two of the most popular prebiotics used in synbiotics, and fortunately most synbiotics use relatively small amounts of either, possibly too low for best effect or maximum production of short chain fatty acids (SCFAs). This is why I use xylitol in grams, not milligrams as my main prebiotic. Xylitol has shown itself to be a better butyrate producer than FOS or GOS. Mannitol is similar in this respect as it interacts with butyrate producing bacteria and increases butyrate production also.

GOS is supposedly to be a better choice in prebiotics as it limits the growth of e.coli, salmonella and clostridia while supporting bifidobacteria and lactobacilli.

in reply to faridaro

I feel that the value of the proper prebiotic is highly undervalued as well as the best dose for maximal effect of the synbiotic, but studies continue to expand on the importance of prebiotics, so that is a very good positive!

I think synbiotics, probiotics, prebiotics and multiple fermented foods offer a lot of potential value for many disease states of which PD is definitely one!

Hi, have you ever taken soil based organisms, SBO.? On a whim I bought a bottle of Swanson SBO. I take it once in awhile, and what I have noticed is, it produces a regular bowel movement. I did not take it all the time. I guess what I read before is that they used it for infections in humans. This Swanson formulation does not have that particular one SBO. They stopped using it when antibiotics came into play. I can only guess that we got a lot more of those when we ate vegetables straight from the garden and fruit straight from the trees. Mary

I haven't, but I understand they are very good. A very broad range of bacteria likely to be closely aligned with what our bodies can readily use effectively much as hunter gatherers would have gotten.

Dr. Ben Lynch who I highly respect says that you have to do it cautiously: "Our focus must be around carefully supporting normal methylation/sulfuration in this [PD] population", see link drbenlynch.com/resource/lea...

He is one of the experts on methylation, may be you can contact him.

You can go to his website drbenlynch.com On the top of the home screen you'll have "Meet Dr. Lynch" where you can open drop down menu at the bottom of which will be "contact us". Hope it helps!

I didn't know this and have been giving my mother high dose b12 and just started her on 5mg folic acid. I'm sure she needs both but didn't know it would affect her Sinemet. Now I really don't know what to do. Seeing her neurologist next week and I'm sure he'll be totally ignorant about supplementation.

Usually supplements designed to lower homocysteine contain 800 mcg folate and it seems that 5mg dosage of folic acid is very high. I would suggest to switch from synthetic folic acid which might create problems in some individuals to methylfolate. Also, if taking B12 it's good to supplement with low dose of Lithium Orotate 5 mg couple of times/week, as lithium is necessary for B12 cellular transport, however Lithium may slightly suppress thyroid function, so it's good to monitor thyroid just in case. 2 members of my family have hypothyroidism and take 5 mg Lithium 2x week with no problems.
