??? Anyone else out there believe that intense mental stimulation (healthy, creative,out-of-the-box,uplifting) will improve my daily walk (shuffle) with PD??? Does coaching mental exercise convey a similar benefit as physical? Lorenzo de Medici was one of my coaches.
RockSteadyThinking: ??? Anyone else out... - Cure Parkinson's
RockSteadyThinking
My son, 37, diagnosed with early onset attends Rock Steady Boxing here in Ontario and the exercises have helped him alot. Exercise and nutrition is important to Parkinsons and most other chronic illnesses. I would encourage you to give it a try!
I could not agree more agree more. I have been boxing for almost 2 years. I pose the question of the benefit of forced thinking. Good mental exercise may offer the similar benefit. Hard to prove with science
I think that science would actually affirm this in that moving from poor thoughts to healthier thoughts has the potential to change the structure and function of the brain.
We aren't educated on how each one of us has the ability as neuroplasticians. I learned this from Dr. Caroline Leaf who is a neuroscientist.
I have also taken classes online from Dr. Rick Hanson who is a neuropsychologist. One course was in Positive Neuroplasticity and the other is a one year course entitled The Foundations of Well Being.
I am also familiar with the work of Dr Daniel Amen and most of these individuals can be viewed on YouTube I believe. Dr. Daniel Amen has just published a new book on Memory Rescue. He has several clinics and is just opening one in LA. I can only hope that he thinks of bringing one to Ontario where I live,. He scans every brain he works with and has a gallery of different kinds of scans that you might find interesting,. Maybe you could find one with Parkinson's. He usually shows a healthy brain next to the brain that isn't working so well because of a variety of variables, I think his website is amenclinics.com
Mental stimulation is important for retaining cognitive skills. However, if this made any difference in the physical I would be a lot better off than I am.
Yes! I recommend doing Su Doku Puzzles, the more difficult they are the better. Also, Cryptic Crossword Puzzles, they are incredibly good. Learning a new language also does the trick, although my memory makes that very difficult for me. I tried for two years to learn French but could not remember the vocabulary. I got the pronunciation right, which helped me a lot.
NEUROPLASTICITY 1.1
The “same characteristic which makes your brain amazingly resilient, also makes it very vulnerable to outside and internal, usually unconscious, influences. Your experiences, repetitive behaviors, and thoughts actually can change the circuitry of your brain to [both] help and hurt you.
"A person desires something because their plastic brain has become sensitized to the substance or experience and craves it. When an urge is satisfied, dopamine, a feel good neurotransmitter, is released… The same shot of dopamine that gives pleasure is also an essential component of neuroplastic change… Your brain forms neuronal connections based on what you do repeatedly in your life – both good and bad…”
