My dad fell a lot but he fell forwards. When he stood up you had to follow him around to make sure he did not fall. I am wondering if you are on L-dopa and is it effective in relieving some symptoms?

I have PD and I DO fall backwards. Never forwards. I am knocked off balance very easily. It seems to be a mystery to my neurologist.

I mentioned to my neurologist and all she said was don’t fall. You could hurt yourself. I have already had a broken hip. But seem to have learned how to fall backwards for now. Not to much damage done recently but once I had a bruise down my left leg and it was really bad, I guess I am just going to stop falling. I wish it was that easy, I am seeing physiotherapist on Monday who apparently specializes in balance issues. Wish me luck I can use all I can get! I must say she has changed my meds and I feel much better but still have the falling issue come to think of it it maybe worse , but at least I can find my mouth and talk most of the time. Which were both big issues before the reduction in my meds.

Good luck. I waited for a year for a place on a fall prevention class only to be told that I was too early in my PD to qualify. The neurologist is trying to get me into a different centre but I’ve heard nothing since January. Fell badly 2 weeks ago. Luckily my husband caught me before I hit the ground and I only had a twisted wrist.

I have lost my balance altogether!! Both forwards and backwards, I can now only walk holding on to someone or using my rollater.

I am a Personal Trainer Certified in Delay the Disease. I had a 75 year old client who fell backwards.

Do you work out? It can help. I worked with my client on leg strength, core strength, practicing balance and taking steps in different directions. After a few months he was able to walk backward (holding onto a railing) without feeling like he was going to fall.

When he first started with me, I’d have to be behind him every time he stood up and he’d fall backward even when holding on.

Exercise should be an every day activity for PWPs.

Hi I have made an appointment fo Monday with a physiotherapist who apparently specializes in balance issues. I can’t believe my neurologist said should just stop falling. I recently have undergone a lot of medication changes mostly for the better

, l now can speak mostly all the time with out stuttering etc and can remember a lot of things I couldn’t before. Can you believe I remembered my bank card number the other day. I was impressed .

But the falling seems to be getting worse now that I think of it. I see her again in June, can you believe we are limited to 3 times a year is my understanding. Guess I had better start taking notes

Thanks for your interest

What is PWP.

PWP = person with Parkinson’s.

I would look for a Delay the Disease class or other exercise class for Parkinson’s. If you can afford it, find a Personal Trainer in your area who works with Parkinson’s or other neurological issues. Sometimes your local Parkinson’s Foundation will have exercise grants available so you can exercise for free or greatly reduced cost.

Order the Delay the Disease books or DVDs and practice at home.

If you do nothing it will get worse.

I belong to the falling backwards group, I find it strange that a neurologist is mystified by this when there are probably hundreds doing falls every day.my neuro could not offer me helpful advice either.

I sure hope we can get some help. I have had some changes in my meds and some things are getting better like my memory and speech issues but the falling and sleeping are not getting better perhaps worse

From my understanding of atypical Parkinson’s, specifically PSP, backwards falls are typical.

My neurologist originally assumed I had PSP but from eye tests has discounted it

My neurologist has me stand feet together and pulls my shoulders backwards to test my balance so they know it's a Parkinson's "thing" I'm not sure the exact scientific reason but it's common I believe.

Yes , it was one of the first things my neuro tested me on , we both nearly finished up on the floor.lol.
