Neupro Patch

Anyone have any experience (good or bad) with the Neupro Patch? I'm currently not taking any PD meds. Neurologist wants to see if Neupro Patch helps with freezing and dizziness.

Dizziness can be caused by a form of dysregulation of blood pressure called orthostatic hypotension ("OH"). This can be caused by Parkinson's. Did your neurologist or other MD check you for this? He certainly should have, because the Neupro patch is a dopamine agonist and this type of medication commonly causes OH all by itself. It also commonly causes impulse control disorders such compulsive sex, gambling, eating or shopping. Did you neurologist warn you about these possible adverse effects?

Dopamine agonists can be an important medication for the treatment of Parkinson's for some patients, but should not be the first resort.

I was diagnosed 16 months ago and have been on 3 mg Neupro patch with no side effects. It helped with slight tremor in left arm and with muscle tightening in left quad. My symptoms are still very mild, no issues at all with impulse control or dizziness.

The only problem I had with the Neupro patch was a bit of chemical burns developing on placement spots. I also couldn't go swimming. I've used 3 dopamine agonists and only Mirapax gave me the miserable side effects. I use 12 mg of ropinerol/day to extend the effectiveness of Sinemet.

I am a swimmer out-of-the pool too much lately. Rytary 95 mg X 15 pills a day and Neupro 6 mg patch. Yes chemical burns. Neurologist keeps upping Rytary. Feeling worse than before. My brother has had DBS. I asked what he found most helpful early on and he said Requip and he continues on Ropinerol generic of Requip? Rytary no longer gives "pay no more than $25 a month coupon. I am asking to return to Sinemet and try Ropinerol. I thought we were going to try Xadago but she suddenly changed her mind when I mentioned Medicare kicks in for me December 2018. Anything now to get back to the pool! Thank you. Your post gives me hope.

I used the patch a few years ago as my first try with meds. It helped a little but the blotches and blisters where too much so I stopped using.

My husband has been using it for at least two years. Says it helps with stiffness, but doesn’t help with freezing episodes.

I have been on the patch for about two years, along with Rytary. I found that when I got to 6 mg that my sleep improved, and the only side effects have been mild occasional nausea, itching at the patch site, and mild swelling of the legs. I also have gained a couple of pounds since on it. All in all, I have found it helpful, and am going to continue it. Although I worried about obsessive behavior disorder, there has been no evidence of it so far.

Hi,

Hubby was on the patch and started showing signs of compulsive behaviour almost right away. He seemed a little manic. Wrote a text book in a week...then switched to gaming which became so obsessive it pretty much destroyed our relationship. Neurologist took him off and onto sinemet. I wish I could have channeled that energy into something positive, but it doesn't work that way I guess...You need someone objective around you so that they can recognize if your vices turn into obsessions due to patch.

I had a horrible experience with the patch

I believe that the two years I spent on the patch damaged me permanently

The Neupro patch was the single greatest drug of all for me. I started with 1 mg and worked up to three. In the middle of that third week I woke up one morning and thought, where have I been? It was that dramatic! I think it was a definite mood elevator for me and energy booster . I moved up to 4 mg and am now back to three. I also take Sinemet 25/100 3x a day and Sinemet cr at night. I take xadago in the am. I am virtually symptomless on the outside except for curling toes on right foot with pain and now a bunion.

I have used Neupro 6 for about 5 years. I have not had any side effects from taking it. I couldn't use Mirapex and really couldn't take Amentadine. my only concern was it was pretty expensive, but now Medicare makes it possible to ask for a tier reduction from your RX insurance and I think they have to reduce it. mine went from about $800 for 3mos. supply to about $8.
