For those uncertain about their precise form of PD, this update may provide some clarity:

"Diagnosis of Parkinson disease (PD) — by far the most prevalent — is often confounded by the common clinical overlap of atypical parkinsonian disorders (APDs), such as progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), multiple system atrophy (MSA), corticobasal degeneration (CBD), and dementia with Lewy bodies [LBD], as well as several rare disorders that are grouped among APDs.

"Each of these phenotypically distinct diseases manifests a number of specific clinical features with overlapping symptoms that have limited treatments and no cures. In recent years, the symptomatic approach to parkinsonian disorders has hit a wall, yet..."

I have a diagnosis of Parkinsonism but the specialist won’t tell me exactly what that means. What the symptoms are and how that differs. Really annoys me

It simply means symptoms observed thus far are 'Parkinson's-like'. I suspect he doesn't want to commit to a more definitive diagnosis until he's had time to gauge your response to meds and to observe how your condition progresses for a reasonable period of time (if he's been your doctor for more than a couple years he should be able to narrow it down for you a bit more however...).

Have been back and for to Dr for about 8 yr - overall response ; oh really well I suppose it could be hormones it could be. ...etc etc So each time I’d go away and keep on trying

Referred to specialist on Parkinsons. Reacted positively to Sinimet. Specialist won’t say what the symptoms of Parkinson’s are. Does she think that if she tells me what they are that I’ll develop psychosomatic symptoms. If so she is mad. Who wants Parkinsons.

I just prefer straight forward considered factual responses. That I can deal with. Then I know where I am.

This faffing around is grrr.

Rant over

PS I am so glad I found this site. It has given me so many answers.

A concise, important essay. The dopamine- nigra model as supreme is outmoded, needs to better to incorporate newer findings, not just those in the posted link. Thanks.
