Very interesting - thanks. Now I'm wondering how I can participate in forced exercise on my exercise bike.

Lower the resistance on your bike and ride at 80-90 rpm. I've been doing it for years, since 2009. Dr. Alberts wrote the introduction to my book: If I Can Climb Mt. Kilimanjaro, Why Can't I Brush My Teeth? I have ridden across Iowa with Jay Alberts; Pedaling for Parkinson's team six times. You can do this when you make up your mind to.

Thanks. I'll give it a go - I currently have the resistance set to maximum. Do you get much relief from cycling and do you have to do it every day to get any benefit ?

Cycling gave me back my life. Dr. Alberts' research shows that the. benefits of cycling 3 hrs per week last up to four weeks after the cycling has stopped. I cycle 4-5 days per week whenever I can. It took a long time on the bike to come back to nearly normal after climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro. Cycling is still my lifeline.

Wow - very impressive. What about exercise bikes ?

It's not about the bike. It's the cadence. Exercise bikes are fine as long as they have a cadence meter.

The thing is For people who didn't exercise before PD ,motivation to do so with PD is far more difficult .You need to be fit to survive PD in the first place as it's easy to find every excuse under the sun not to take regular exercise if you have never done so.

Few of my friends without PD can keep up with me as they have never been 'sporty'.

An often heard comment is how can you be so fit with Parkinsons.?

My reply is how can you be so unfit without PD!

One of my standard replies to the universe of excuses not to exercise is: Would you rather ride a bike or a wheelchair? It's up to you.

RE:" I currently have the resistance set to maximum" (partypants)

Nan, do you typically have your resistance set high when you cycle? Is your goal to have high tension with slower movement or low tension with faster movement?

It's all about the cadence. You need to maintain 80-90 revs per minute and you won't do that on maximum resistance!

Bazillion is correct. Lower the resistance, increase the cadence to 80-90 rpm.

You have to wake up in the morning saying " I can't wait to get on my bike " today. If you don't have that mindset find something that gives it to you.

I do enjoy cycling - the problem is at the moment my son has his campervan parked in front of my garage all day so I can't get at my bike.

I would have to shoot them.

LOL

You need to get your priorities straight. Move the damn camper!

Not only watch them but believe them!

I suffer from Parkinson's induced anxiety. Where most people slow down I sped up. Even the gym trainers would say that I was a little intense. I would walk into my PD doctor,s office and my blood pressure would climb to 168/138. I would spend an hour on the treadmill and then muscle train for a half an hour. I would collapse I was so exhausted, but I would burn off the nervous energy I had accumulated. Today with the help of medication nobody can tell just how crippling my PD is. When you sit there shaking you get the " poor Parkie treatment ," but when you jump out of your skin because you think that your significant other is to close to the car in front of you I get the sit in the back seat treatment.

Thought I was being careful and my SO was way too close to that car in front! When I drive and stopped at a light, often a car will pull out of a lot on my right and cut in front of me to make a left turn while I panic. He knows that there is plenty of room, but with PD I think he is going to hit me!

I've found that meditation is very helpful in controlling anxiety.
