I have had Parkinson for 10 years and now have difficulty turning over in bed. This interrupts my sleep pattern a lot!

That's all I need to hear. I'm out the door in the a.m. to pick up some linens. That turning over thing makes me nervous.

Because we Pd patients often do not do do any exercise our muscles lose their strength and we are unable to turn over in bed or get in and out of bed easily, as we have done all our lives.

It is not too late for you to start doing upper body exercises to strengthen your muscles and overcome this problem.

Many thanks, John. Any suggestions as regards exercises? Harold

Harold, problems turning over in bed is a classic pd problem. I noticed it before diagnosis. I was much fitter then than now so exercise was minimal help. It is lack of muscle strength from lack of dopamine overnight. For me long acting Sinimet on retiring has helped the most plus a bed aid which gives me something to grab and pull on as i turn.

I'm glad to hear that more and more Pd patients are finding that exercise helps.

Keep it up guys, it is the only way forward.

Harold. I would suggest you get a physiotherapist to tell you what exercises to do. You need to strengthen your arms and upper body muscles. If you are unable to afford the physio, practice the turning over in bed, but on a harder surface. The more you do the turning over, the fitter you will become.

Bed Loop - no I had never heard of them either before I got one

There are many suppliers but the above takes you to a picture.. I got mine thro ugh my Parkisonson nurse and occupational therapist . Brilliant bit of kit. Not o nly can I manoeuvre myself out of bed but I give my upper body a work out at the same time and have narrowly missed spending hundreds of pounds on an all-singing/dancing bed.

Turning over is not just strength. It is one of those learned skills we lose. Think of the triumph when a baby manages to turn itself over for the first tine,

Does this go under the mattress and come up on each side of the bed?

Yes. And Its adjustable, I believe from single to double. I had the man from medical loans position it under the mattress so I didn't really see that part of.it Mine is white enamel. As you can see you can position it as far from the bedhead as suits and it is very steady. Before I got it I was pulling muscles and hurting my wrists in my efforts to get out of bed .and even falling asleep before managing the manoeuvre.

If daunted by the price of silk nightwear, satin works just as well.
