Stop Thinking

Many times during the day and night I am stresssful thinking about the past and my Parkinson Plight. The stress promotes anxiety which increases symptoms.

Would anyone have a procedure which stops these thoughts in their tracks?

When I catch myself thinking negatively, I ask myself:" What am I do this for?" Followed up by the question: "What within me is doing this?.

This questions seem to stop the thoughts in their tracks, and peace follows.

Have a blessed new year :)

I take 10 milligrams of Lexapro a day which helps immensely. But on top of that I keep moving. If it's evening and I can't walk or hike or bike or run errands I do dishes and clean and organize, do stretches, yoga Etc Anything to feel in control, at least a little. I also try to stay in touch with family and friends. If I don't do these things, about 5 o'clock each evening, my existential crisis moves in. I do resent the fact that sitting on my butt and quietly drooling is not an option if I want to be mentally at peace. Sitting too long is painful anyway, so I guess it works out.

Doing dishes by hand is a very soothing activity. I use my dishwasher for storage now. It's a piece of crap anyway. My dishes are much cleaner when I do them.

These are some great answers! I find that meditation often calms me down. I try to determine what things I can have some control over and what to let go. Then I try to breathe deeply and let the flotsam and jetsam go.

Good stuff Nan. Thank you. What are flotsam/jetsam?

Go Away? My thoughts are almost entirely things I have no control over. I like how you lead an active life.

Keep busy! Make plans.

Don't dwell on past things, see below

Flotsam = floating wreckage of a ship. Jetsam = items thrown overboard off ship.

I wish I did , as I get stress and then anxiety. I traced it to the carbadopa/ levodopa , too much or too little?? My legs get weak, but when it stops, my legs get back to a normal walk. 1 am on 1 1/2 pills every 3 hours a day (25-100mg tab.) 1 also take pramipexole at night ( 2 125 mg tab at dinner and two at bedtime--these for restless legs which occur towards morning. No anxiety at night. The anxiety comes on even without the stress.i was diagnosed in 2014,and when given the Carbodopa/levodopa I thought I was cured!! A miracle! Usually , if I take a Ativan, it will go away. But I don't want to get addicted to it. I am 73 and still feel pretty good most of the time. Ginnyk

I take the same meds and same dosage, same time. Exactly. My symptom of weak legs is the same as yours.

I exercise daily and am 74 years old.

Question: Will you continue with the Carbodopa/Levodopa? What has provided the most success?

Thank you Ginny.

I am staying with the carbodopa/levadopa until I see my neurologist. I am considering Rytary, I may be able to go longer periods of time between dosages.

You are a former mental health therapist, in your profile. Helped some people I bet. But is there magic to mental therapy? Giving services, helpful acts for others is a fine way to push back at negative thinking. You help somebody and it helps you to be helpful, raises the spirit. Do you have opportunity to serve people at present? Adding the stress of a past we cannot change to the ever present stressful, serious nature of PD will get to people like us from time to time. Why do you attend to this bulletin board? You're not alone.

Thank You, Buzz,

I well know what it feels like helping someone, we all do. I have found that I need this feeling, having PD, even more. I haven't practiced for 12 years and there has been a gap in my life. And I don't refer to PD.

Buzz, I need to help and I need to be grateful. Never mind PD.

Me too. I am familiar with those needs. :) Lets carry on then with some uncalled for, inappropriate levity.

Little Johnny was asked by teacher, "What have you learned in 2016?" Little Johnny blurted, "I can take a poopie in the girls bathroom." :)

Just say stop to your thoughts. Watch your breath. With some regular practice I get my tremor completely away for the time being. Practice mindfulness

Hi Fjohn. Yes! Stress does terrible things to patients with Pd. How do we avoid stress? If you start to think of what causes you stress and then think what you can do to relieve you of that stress then you are doing the best you can. Don't accept that there is nothing you ca do to remove that stress from your life. If you don't remove it, it will remove you.

Stress is often caused by people, usually people close to you. If you were to sit down with whomever is causing you stress and tell him/her what it is doing to you and what is going to happen if it does not stop, then there is agood chance that you can find ways of overcoming that stress. If you cannot resolve the cause then consider distancing yourself from that person. Often the person causing the stress is a child or a parent. In that case you have to explain that unless the problem is resolved it will kill you, and will that do the family member any good?

If the problem is money, or unemployment, which equates to money, then the problem has to be solved by that person, not you! By undertaking the responsibility for that person's problem you are not helping to solve it. You are merely prolonging it.

There are many causes of stress but instead of worrying about it, take action!

Whenever I start feeling sorry for myself I think of ways that my life could be much worse. Comparing myself to someone trying to live in or leave poor bombed out Aleppo, Syria right now helps me put things in perspective.

Then I thank our creator for all the things I am grateful for in my life (a roof over my head, family, the country I live in), including many things most of us take for granted, like having legs, hands, eyes that see, running water, roads, supermarkets full of food, rubbish collections, trees, our life-giving sun, etc etc.

Focusing on what you are grateful for makes the difficult stuff seem less significant. You might even begin to see the difficulties as a challenge you've been given to help you grow stronger, and even start to feel grateful for that.

Me to have this problem but only in the evening and of cause before sleeping. Sometimes your brain is not your friend.

I am surprised of all the situations the brain is coming up with far away in time and always very negative viewed from my point of standing.

Why is this happening and why in the evening before falling into sleep ?

Your wurst enemy is yourself.

I am wondering if my personality is the sum of the chemicals your body feeds the brain with?

Right amount pr chemical and right % between this chemicals.

When i stopped using the NAUPRO pad (dopamin agonist) i became depressed and unhappy and going from loving to always due things i went into doing nothing .

But i am ok in the morning and the day but in the evening my brain starts to terrorize me and makes it hard to sleep.

I discover something funny 2 days ago.

I played very loud music some hours one evening and the problem with the brain was absent.

I don't have an explanation how this works but ma by that little baster of a brain was busy doing other things than terrorizing the owner. :)

Maybe you should try it ?

Stopping negative thinking is easier said than done but just try to focus on the here and now and take one day at a time everyone is different and Pd progresses differently in each individual I have only just been diagnosed although I reckon I've had symptoms for 3 years at least I am on an agonist at the moment and stiffness was a problem before the meds now I am feeling much better apart from a little nausea. Keep as active as possibleI do jogging 3 times a week which gets those endorphins going do lots that you want to do and keep your spirits lifted focus on the positivity that just around the corner there is a cure for Pd and try meditation I love the calm app hope you are feeling better soon

Our brains, among other things, are danger and trouble scanners. I watch that part of my brain kick in whenever I feel especially vulnerable or unwell or unfocused on a distraction. Our brains know that if we were part of the herd of gazelles on the African plains we'd be in big trouble....wait for me!

Parkinson's people lack a chemical called Serotain (not sure of the spelling). This chemical is one that enables happiness & positive thinking. A good antidepressaant is essential for me to keep a more positive view on things.

I also find great comfort from the Bible & copy verses to carry in my pocket to read when I start a negative slide.

But best of all, I found faith to be the most help. I may not know what my futures holds, but I know & trust the One who does.

Dear AliceJoyce,

The last thing my father told me was..."Keep the Faith." Here I am at 74 years old and I have forgotten.

I can tell because of the anxiety and fear that I carry daily.

How can I remember? Where can I start?
