My Doc prescribed the neupro 4 mg/24 hr patch. I have just started it and feel a little nauseous. What results have others had with this? Note: This is also called Rotigotine

Transdermal System.

Thanks,

Wil

Hi @2011rav, the patch comes in 4 sizes : 2, 4, 6 and 8 mg. I first tried Neupro in April 2014 (2mg). I made a note on 3rd day, "feeling much better, especially motor symptoms". Followed by on 4th day " a lot of dizziness" and during that night I woke with strong dizziness and nausea and a feeling of overall weakness that was so overpowering it set of a panic attack. Needless to say I removed the patch and no longer took Neupro.

The middle of December 2015 and into January 2016 my overall symptoms became worse, my neuro was on annual leave and I did not know what to do. Then I found a box of Neupro I had not used back in April and decided out of desparation to try the patches again. If they did not make me feel better at first they did not make feel worse neither so I continued. A week later my neuro got back and prescribed 4mg, then a couple of weeks later 6mg. And then in February some time 8mg. I was handling all of these stronger doses okay, other than becoming very tired and sleepy in the afternoon.

I am still on 8mg patches applied at 8 a.m. Do they help? I can't say since my "Off" time has progressed quite a bit over this year and I have added Azilect a couple of months ago which could be helping out... it's hard to say. So there you have my adventure with Neupro, for better or worse. I would say carry on with the 4mg if you can handle the nausea and at the first indication that it lessens move up to 6 and then to 8mg if you are handling things okay. But this is a decision you would have to talk over with your neuro anyway.

I also felt nauseous when I was first prescribed the patch so abandoned it. However more recently my new consultant suggested I took it at night so I would sleep through any side effects and it's worked!

I have had no side effects. Apply a 8 mg patch at night. Worked up 2/4/6/8 mg

Back to feeling "normal" most of the time like when I first started sinemet after dx..nearly 8 years ago.

I was really scared of the possible ocd effects as there is a family history but none. I find it very comforting to know that if , god forbid, I was taken to A&E non compos mentis the patch would be there doing its thing regardless of the ward round times/prescribing vagaries of the hospital. I also take 4 x 25/100 sinemet but don't now feel I have to set the alarm for the first dose and can catch up on sleep if I have had a disturbed night. I then take the sinemet at 3½/4 hour intervals thereafter

I have never had any affects and take 8m patch. Good luck.

My husband started using Rivastigmine patch (low dose) about 6 months ago and his memory started to improve and also less hallucinations. Took a little time for it to kick in. I'm not sure if this is the same patch you are referring to? He also takes Sinemet. The Dr. just increased the dosage on Rivastigmine to 13.3 mg. and he continues to have excellent results. We put the patch on him once a day at night right before he goes to sleep. Good luck.

Thanks for your update. So glad it is working for you. I have just started with the patch so it will be awhile before I know if it helps. Did he have any nausea?

My husband takes 2mg neurpro he tried 4mg, but he was so nausea, dizzy and out of it. I had to go pick him up from the office. The 2mg had good benifets the first 6 months, but now he needs to try something more. He is supposed to try 3mg this weekend to see how he tolerates it. If he can't tolerate it the doctor wants him to start Sinemet. He also takes Azlect.

This medication is a Dopamine Agonist("DA"). Be aware that DAs can cause impulse control disorders such as compulsive gambling, sex, or eating. DAs can also cause orthostatic hypotension. This is a fancy term for loss of blood flow to the brain when you stand up, which can result in fainting and injury.

Hi Wil,

My husband, 51 had a Neupro patch for a few months. His energy level went way up, but he started gaming compulsively so his Neurologist took him off it. Recommend an objective family member to monitor you for any worrisome addictive/compulsive behaviors appearing. If you have a history of issues with alcohol or gambling be extra careful. Husband didn't have a lot of nausea but skin irritations were common from patch sites.

My mom has been using Nuevo patch in addition to pill for over 1 year. Started at 1 mg for 1 month. 2 mg for 1 month. Now at 4mg for the last 3 months and NO symptoms with great results. Very important to start at low doses and gradually increase. Good luck!!
