Ok, so I wake up this morning and see a big friggin cold sore on my upper lip! never had one before, so naturally I am freaking out! So, I go shopping to buy Abreva, which people say is the best remedy for cold sores! On the way home, I get an incredible full feeling in my bladder and I feel like I am going to pee right through my yoga pants! Thank God I made it home and to the bathroom in time! I just turned 59 in October, is all of this new and wonderful stuff happening cause I am getting older or is my PD getting worse! Yikes! Any ideas or help would be appreciated as I try to type this and not like in the mirror at this monster sore on my lip!

Not much to do except let it run its course and use the abreva. If you catch them early you can sometimes use oral antivirals if they bad enough. Good to see you back.

this will freak you out "Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV). There are two types of herpes simplex virus: HSV-1 and HSV-2. Both virus types can cause sores around the mouth (herpes labialis) and on the genitals (genital herpes)."

Good luck

Well, I am single and have not been with anyone so I find it interesting that this "popped" up:) I know stress can aggravate an outbreak:)

It was just the name nothing implied about how you got it.

Honestly, since I have PD, what's a little herpes on the lip, right?

I had a major break out of shingles this past summer. They were quater size blisters around my waist on my right side. Horrific! They left scars they were so bad. Had never had shingles before. Didn't even know what it was until a friend told me.

Quick word from work....a prior roommate had cold sores and used the amino acid lysine to suppress them. 3000-7000 mg a day is used to suppress an active infection (from the web) and 1000 a day for maintenance.

Thanks!!

Also, don't eat food high in the amino acid arginine - it is the antagonist to lysine and can prompt an out break. Peanut butter is high in arginine...

There is a theory that the herpes simplex virus exists in everyone and is only activated due to stress.

I have had my fair share of stress, and if anyone else tells me that I need to relax and not worry so much I just might slap them:) Just kidding! Well, maybe not...

Worry and stress makes PD worse. Reduce your stress and it will help with our PD

Carolinagirl, I have informed my children and husband that I am now living the Parkinsons part of my life: I don't want to hear the truth; I don't need to know of any problems; just handle me gently and tell me what you think I want to hear and what you think will be calming. I, on the other hand, promise to take really good care of myself so they don't have to do caregiving for as long as possible.

Thank you. I needed to hear that:) And I will share it with my daughters:)

I like that! I feel like printing it out and handing it around to family. It's very hard to shift gears and not be the caretaker and the matriarch of a big family and worried about everybody else. But I am sure not up to it anymore. Concentrating on doing things slower and doing one thing at a time.

Enidah, this wisdom comes from a video Off the internet buy an Israeli neurologist who indicated medication should be used sparingly all that is necessary is to reduce stress stress tickly and to exercise in order to protect the dopamine we still have. this led me to the proclamation to my children and husband to start dealing with me as they think I wish to be dealt with. Good luck.

amen to that. i love my two daughters more than anything in the world, and I raised them on my own. we are all so close and i find it hard to not help them and worry about them and their future. My younger daughter asks me what happened to the wild crazy mom i used to be. but she is getting better at accepting the fact that some days are just crappy days, and maybe i need a t shirt that says i am falling apart:)

cold sores are the least of your worries! Breathe deeply, and slowly, let the stress go, and know that cold sores are gone by day 10, even if you do nothing. Been getting them all my life. Yes its embarrassing, but it aint got nothin on pd tremors etc ...

( holding an ice cube on it when u first feel it popping up , helps too)

Thanks for the ice cube tip! And you are so right about those tremors!

Lysine is the thing for cold sore virus. Like a miracle. Also cut down on arginine foods.

Donzim profile image
Donzim

Cold sores, herpes and shingles are related in that they are each caused by variations of the herpes virus. The cold sores and shingles (don't know about genital herpes but it's probably the same, being transferred by contact with open lesion) are a sign your immune ststem is not working well. Research amino acids to learn how they compete with each other in some cases and lysine is overshadowed by arginine. Adjust that and supplement to boost your immune system.

Unlike cold sores, shingles will require medication and that might include a pain killer. Nevertheless, dosing on lysine is for both, even with meds.

shingles, I hear are caused by dormant pox incident that acts up in adulthood, me thinks?

I too have had both of your symptoms. For cold sores I've used mouth washes. My pd doc recommended I get the shingles vaccine which I did and so far have very little cold sores. Pd is such a weird illness that Scientists are still learning about.
