My Movement Disorder Doctor just prescribed Rytary. For the past six years I've just been on Azilect and MirapexER. Can anyone who is on this Rx tell me the pros and cons?f

Thanks Hal for your response. Good to know it works! As for expense, approx. what is your monthly co-pay?

Right now it's 25 $ but I don't know next year. It is not a generic.

Call the company that makes Rytary - they have an excellent staff that will help you pay for your drugs

Hello Fenian5

I have taken it again and it worked great.

I took rytary for a few months and it worked great. Then i started having bad side effects and stopped takng it. is carbidopa-levodopa (senimet) with a extender. I can not speak for tremor because i do not have it. It completely relieved my symptoms. I have stiffness in my legs and arms and hands. My gait is bad and i stumble when i walk. When i took Rytary i was on the top of the world i was symptom free.

I have taken it again and it worked great again.

Hello Bailey, your reply is very encouraging. May I ask what bad side effects you experienced? Now that you started taking it again, do you still experience the same side effects? How long did it take before you knew it was working?

It worked the first day for me.

At first i hand no down time. Then at about 3 hours into a dose it would fail. I could feel it coming then all at once i would shut down. I would take me a hour to recover so i was down 2 out of every 6 hours. The kicker was when i woke up one night and could not say any thing that made sence it was just gibberish. Off to the er thought it was a stoke $4000 later no answer went home and stopped ryary.

Don't let this bother you every one reacts differantly you will be fine. Just be aware of possible side effects. If it happened today i would just ride it out.

Side effects for me have lessened over time. I have very few now and just let them run their course.

I am not at takng at this time just taking carbidopa-levodopa and requip.

I take 18 25/100 carbidopa-levodopa a day and 1 6 mg 24 hour requip.

Rytary is long acting time released carbadopa/levodopa. You may be taking 4-6 pills at once. They have kept you off it as it's lifetime for pd is only about 10 years maybe less. You may or may not have side effects. Pretty much the same as mirapex.

I could not continue with rytary due to my slow metabolism. It would metabolize all at once and my gi tract went crazy. After 5 weeks of adjusting doses I had to stop. I went back to my overwhelming doses of every 2 hours.

Perhaps someone who it is working well for will reply to you. I know there are several patients in my mds office who like it. Best of luck and feel well Judy

Judy, thank you for the info. I'm on day four of a two week trial; so far haven't noticed any changes; good or bad. Just trying to get as much input as possible.

Why did he/she skip the sinemet and madopar stage? Aren't they cheaper?

Soup, I don't know why. Good question to ask him. I have to call him with report after 1 week. Thank you.

My husband's Dr. put him on Rytary when he was getting terrible down times. On Rytary he takes 3 pills at 6:30 a.m. , 2 at 10:30 a.m. and 2 at 2:30 p.m. and 2 at 6:30 p.m. Everyone is different, of course, but this time frame (4 hours) has worked for him. He has been lucky not to have any side effects and with four hours in between has no down times. He is on 36.25 mg, 145 mg cap. He was diagnosed 15 years ago and is still walking, albeit very slow, but he feels Rytary has been a big help. Good luck.
