I just recently became aware of glutathione suppositories.

I haven't tried them yet, but thought someone might be interested if you

haven't heard of them.

Several amino acids are precursors to glutathione including:

N-acetyl-cysteine in the treatment of Parkinson's disease. What are we waiting for?

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/225...

Alpha Lipoic Acid: ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/183...

Acetyl l carnitine: ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/339...

Combined R-alpha-lipoic acid and acetyl-L-carnitine exerts efficient preventative effects in a cellular model of Parkinson's disease.

It ends up costing you a small fortune.

I think I read somewhere that NAC potentiates cancer?

silvestrov profile image

NAC is a free radical scavenger which reduces cellular oxidation. In order to kill cancer cells a pro-oxidant state must occur and drugs/supplements like nilotinib, xanthohumol, selenium can produce such a state but when NAC is added to active cancer therapy it scavenges the Pro-oxidant free radicals and prevents apoptosis - planned cell death (as does beta carotene for that matter). So NAC does not cause cancer but interferes with ongoing cancer therapy. Like any generalization there are exceptions. In one study NAC potentiated the effect of the cancer drug imatinib.

Thank you for your reply ands the references. To tell you the truth I don't know what to take for supplements and it's really frustrating. Does anything work?

I almost ordered N-acetyl cysteine a precursor to glutathione from an online store but first I googled and found research that the summary of concluded it was of no appreciable benefit to PWPD. I will follow this post to see if the glutathione suppository has been of help to people.

My neuro said it can't cross the blood brain barrier.

whitakerwellness.com/health...  Can cross using IV Therapy, we just started this recently...will update if/when symptoms change

I just noticed your post from 5 months ago. Did you go through with the IV glutathione therapy and did it do anything positive. Would appreciate your feedback . thank you Mary

Please let me know how the therapy is helping

it would be easier just to drink a whey shake to get your glutathione.  I would suggest you do some research in mitochondrial biogenesis. The root problem in PD is poorly functioning mitochondria. Look into PQQ (pyrorolo-quinoline). Keep your mitochondria healthy and avoid neurodegeneration. There are multiple ways to support your mitochondrial health. Enjoy the research. Learning something new is fun. Having fun produces more dopamine. You get a "learners high". Learned that from a cognitive psychologist at NYU.

R-alpha-lipoic acid and acetyl-L-carnitine complementarily promote mitochondrial biogenesis in murine 3T3-L1 adipocytes.

"Treatments with the combination of LA and ALC at concentrations of 0.1, 1 and 10 micromol/l for 24 h significantly increased mitochondrial mass, expression of mitochondrial DNA, mitochondrial complexes, oxygen consumption and fatty acid oxidation in 3T3L1 adipocytes."

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/180...

Both ALA and ALC easily cross the blood brain barrier.

Additionally:

Behavioral and Neurochemical Effects of Alpha-Lipoic Acid in the Model of Parkinson’s Disease Induced by Unilateral Stereotaxic Injection of 6-Ohda in Rat

"LA is an antioxidant naturally synthesized in human body. In its structural formula, there are two thiol groups that can be oxidized or reduced thus, it is a redox couple. Both the oxidized form LA and the reduced form dihydrolipoic acid (DHLA) act as antioxidant."

"Furthermore, DHLA is able to regenerate other antioxidants with low molecular weight, such as glutathione (GSH), coenzyme Q10 and vitamins A and C."

"Therefore, α-lipoic acid prevented the damage induced by 6-OHDA or by chronic use of L-DOPA in dopaminergic neurons, suggesting that α-lipoic could be a new therapeutic target for Parkinson's disease prevention and treatment."

I took L glutathione and NAC but did not work...That is why people get glutathione injection. Glutathion nasal spray also works according to parkinson's disease foundation.

It is good for liver and other disease like parkinson's as the patients saw improvement according to studies.

Yes, hard to realize improvements. One reason my hubby got some IV Glutathione shots then went back to the liposomal glutathione and NAC - noticed improvements with energy, and reduced exhaustion (hot weather affected his Lyme disease and he was totally exhausted). Lyme numbers went down and now we are trying to keep PD from progressing (at least too rapidly).

Yes, both hubby and I use the suppositories. A little less expensive then some of the pills and/or IV Glutathione shots.

Been considering this route. How's it worked out?
