Am seeking experiences and opinions from those who have taken Entacapone, (Comtan).

Entacapone is a COMT inhibitor, prescribed, in my case, to enhance the effects of levadopa/carbidopa. However, after reading the lengthy list of possible side effects and warnings, I'm having second thoughts.

Any opinions would be appreciated.

While I was taking it, I did not notice any side effects and no real benefit, so discontinued use.

I have taken Stalevo (together with ropinirole and rasagiline) for 5 years. I think it extended the duration of effectiveness compared to Sinemet, but the change was not dramatic. I have no side-effects additional to those caused by the other PD drugs.

i took Entacapone for almost a year before my dsb surgery. the only side-effect i experienced was a change in the colour of my urine. it boosted the levadopa/carbidopa for. MY neurologist was a pharmacist first. so I feel comfortable with is care. what are your major concerns?

I switched from Sinemet 25/100 to Stalevo about 2 years ago and found it to be more beneficial with far fewer side effects.

My husband has been taking entacapone for over 1year now.

I credit this medication with stopping his tremors.

He did develop a little dyskenesia but I feel the tradeoff is well worth it.

Not everyone reacts the same to medication; so I am just informing you of my husband's response .

I can't say for sure that it extended the effectiveness of the sinemet but certainly not having a tremor is a real bonus.

I don't know if it is unusual to lose a tremor completely but I feel tremor must be a very tiring part of Parkinson's.

All side effects of medications are quite frightening but

Parkinson’s Disease would have severe symptoms without them.

Whether to add another is always a hard decision.

Good luck

Used it successfully for six months, after which didn't extend the c/l significantly so stopped it. That is probably an individual thing.

Funny you should be posting about considering Comtan. My Doctor put me on it just a month ago to see if it would help with the Sinimet but after three weeks my memory from minute to minute was a struggle. If it was helping I'm not sure. Nothing significant for sure but I was still on half dose so not a good judge of its effectiveness. I have tried many other drugs to support Sinimet and have had bad side effects from them too. Guess you need to give it a try for yourself, huh? Everyone is different.

I've been taking stalevo for over two years, with several side effects including fainting spells, dyskinesias and severe skin rash in my legs. So I am discontinuing it, replacing it gradually with Mucuna pruriens. I was taking 50 mg 4 times a day and have now reduced it to 100 mg (in two takes), only one day a week. Hope to drop it altogether in the next couple of months

I am taking Comtan and I too was concerned , another pill another side effect. I have the luxury of my dr letting me cut my meds in half to start to see how I feel with them . So. Instead of taking a whole comtan twice a day with my carbo/Levo I take a 1/2 once or twice a day . I also take one azilect with my morning dose of carbo/levo
