Stalevo is Sinemet plus 1 extra ingredient, Entacopone. The following is copied from wikipedia.

Entacapone (INN) (/ˌɛntəkəˈpoʊn/ or /ɛnˈtækəpoʊn/) is a drug that functions as a catechol-O-methyl transferase (COMT) inhibitor. It is used in the treatment of Parkinson's disease.

When administered in conjunction with dopaminergic agents such as L-DOPA, entacapone prevents COMT from metabolizing L-DOPA into 3-methoxy-4-hydroxy-L-phenylalanine (3-OMD) in the periphery, which does not easily cross the blood brain barrier (BBB).

Pharmacologically, entacapone is somewhat similar to carbidopa or benserazide, in that it is an inhibitor of an enzyme that converts L-DOPA into a compound that cannot cross the blood brain barrier.

Carbidopa and benserazide inhibit aromatic L-amino acid decarboxylase, which converts L-DOPA into dopamine, which cannot cross the blood brain barrier.

Entacapone is a member of the class of drugs known as nitrocatechols.

Thanks,,, I needed that. I take 2 - Carb 25/Lev 100 every 5 hours since i started using Entacapone. Before i was taking Carb 25/Lev 100 sometimes as often as every 2 hours. When i first started Entacapone it amazed me how much of an effect it had on me. It seemed as if i had awaken from a comma. I had taken Azilect for several years but stopped about a year ago. The side effects were bad. I have some of the side effects on Entacapone,,, but not near as bad. I have a life again. The dyskinsia is present,,, but i can live with that. I take 2 Entacapone daily and it is amazing how much life has changed. I drive to town, by myself,, buy stuff at Wal-Mart (I just buy what i can remember,, i am sick of carrying list :) ) I go and see friends,,, I always carry my fishing pole,, haven't got around to actually fishing yet,, I just like to walk down the creek,, you know,, talk to tha birds and fury critters,,, Life is good,,, Also my friends invite me over now that i am able to travel some,, We eat lots of catfish also. I've even rode a 2 wheel motorcycle,,, I was building a trike it but still needs work,, who knows,, i would like to finish trike just to scoot around on the back roads,, got people that are willing to help,,, i don't think i would be able to do the work by myself,,, ego demands i do something,, for some reason they will not let me paint,,, Imagine that.

I appreciate y'all explaining how it works,, i was sorta wondering bout that,,, all i knew was,, "It works great for me." Later LD

Hi Shol. Are you aware of the side effects of levodopa medication? If not, I would suggest that you look it up and speak to your doctor. The side effects can be worse than the Pd, and far more expense to counteract.

What symptoms were you told would be improved by the medication? Did that happen? If not, perhaps you are on the wrong type of medication and taking more if it makes things worse.

Kind regards

John
