I would imagine the more you take the less effective it becomes.

I worked with Paraplegics etc. for some years , and one of the worst problems was constipation, but the most effective remedy then, was, I believe Senkot, which came as a Chocolate drink. (The Patients called it Jollop) It worked over a 6- 8 hour period without all the discomfort associated with Movicol. (which they did not have then) Another one was Liquid Parrafin which though effective they do not use today, as it prevented absorption of certain vitamins, and is a suspected carcinogen. I believe you can still buy the emulsion variety which is as effective. but I do think it better if a diet regime can be adopted to make evacuation easier (with occasional recourse to laxatives as they do make the gut lazy, and are never intended as a long term solution) Live Yogurt is a good way of introducing essential bacteria back into gut to keep it Healthy, along with a diet of fresh vegetables and fruit, and some sort of high fibre porridge. They used to advertise Senokot as Re-educating the bowels .

But I believe it is a good diet that achieves that.

I can understand in many issues, peoples appetites deteriorate as they become more ill or less mobile. I do think the Doctor would be better to give a temporary appetite stimulant rather than constant laxative treatment. which just creates a vicious circle. (However this is only my opinion which counts for nothing)

I used to have bad constipation. I now eat two good sized kiwifruit a day and no longer have that problem. Much better than taking medication.

I eat kiwis each day (I live in NZ after all) but what has really worked for me is 2 drops of iodine in small glass of water daily. Its MAGIC !

Hi thanks for replies....I've taken liquid parafin in my time and it's vert effective but it's not given any more. I have porridge and honey each morning, love veg and fruit not to good with water. Walk bout 3 long walks a week...

Ah those words came into my head after one long session of Movicol and senokots just felt like sharing them. I know I can always do that with you all here without being thought of as crazy !!

I have suffered with constipation for over 50 years. Over this past year, I tried something that has worked - excuse the pun - very well. I sit on the toilet, when I feel that there is a motion there, trying to break out. I first of all massage the sphincter with a wad of toilet paper, not moving it over the skin but massaging the area around the sphincter. While I am doing this, I push down with my stomach muscles and I can feel the sphincter relaxing and the stool moving. My stomach has worked every day since then,

As far as any medication is concerned, the body builds up a resistance to everything and nothing is effective after a certain amount of time. You have to keep changing products regularly to get the best effect.

I use Smooth Move tea bags. My PD neuro told me every other night. I also do the rocking chair movement on the toilet. It works. Rock forward then back over & over. I sometimes have to change it up a bit with dulcolax or enema if it gets bad again. I also find a glycerin suppository in morning in addition to all the other stuff gives me the urge.

I have struggled with constipation all my life, in other words lots of experience. Myralax or one of the generics is really good for daily regularity. It doesn't cause your stomach, or colon any pain or bloat.
