Aggravating isn't it? In my case it started with lower jaw tremor, which caused grinding and chattering of teeth, which caused sharp edges on faces of teeth. Add to this the partial loss of tone in cheek and facial muscles, (as in "Parkinson's Mask"), and it happens. I feel it is definitely PD related, but have no clue as to how to prevent it.

Best Wishes

I find myself biting my lip sometimes too. I never related it to PD. This PD is a real pain....literally.

OMG! I'm not alone. Only since maybe a year ago I've been nibbling on my lips too. What in the world is this about?

Must be an anxiety driven PD thing. I've gained a ton of weight since my DX in 2007. I'm never hungry for all the food

I eat. It's an attempt to calm down/comfort the symptoms of PD.

Strange to say I have been doing this for years biting my lower lip even before diagnosis, so it could be a stress thing I suppose. I bite my nails too and wish I could stop that.

Lifes a bugger and three quarters sometime!

I have been biting the inside of my lower lip and inside of the right cheek for last few months. read somewhere that biting the inside of your mouth was a PD problem. Seems to be under control last few weeks. Be aware of the condition seems to diminish the condition ??

My husband (diagnosed with PD in 1994) has developed this problem in this last year. In his case, he bites the inside of his mouth in the same place. The dentist buffed down his teeth and said the problem was dry mouth. Dentist recommended all the dry mouth products--mouthwash, toothpaste, chewing gum, etc. My husband tried them and sometimes uses them, but doesn't find them very effective. Dentist also warned that dry mouth (caused by PD meds) also precedes many tooth issues including decay and loss of teeth. He has put my husband on quarterly teeth cleaning and told my husband to be very diligent about home tooth cleansing--flossing, twice daily brushing, use of little "tree" cleaner between teeth and use of a gum massager..

Dentist also told him to use a fluoride mouthwash at night before he goes to bed as it is very effective in preventing decay. Dentist warned not to swallow fluoride mouthwash or drink anything after using it. Has it helped? Not sure. My husband has tooth issues, still. He finds the antiseptic/anesthetic gels available over the counter and marketed for canker sores and other mouth issues helpful for temporary pain at the site of the bite. Sometimes his mouth is so dry he bites while he is talking to me. Finally dentist made husband a rubbery/plastic thing that fits over back teeth to prevent the biting. Husband can only wear it when not eating and must take out dental bridge when he uses "thing."

I'll add my name to the list of lip biters. I have a choice of 2 locations. When I bite I generally do so 3 or 4 times in one day or 2 or 3 times in one meal. And then don't do it again for a few days or a couple of weeks. Very painful especially the 2nd 3rd etc bite in the same place.

I suppose its not too surprising that this could be yet another problem attributable to PD, after all it is only another example of muscle and the dysfunctional control of same.

I keep biting my lower lip frequently in the same spot but usually only while chewing food. Very painful. I attribute the problem to the Bell's Palsy I experienced prior to being diagnosed with PD. Fortunately, I have not developed chewing on my lip yet. Just one more thing to look forward to.

I think some of the meds cause compulsive obsessive tendencies. I find myself grinding my teeth, never did before. My jaw was hurting so bad I went to doctor and twice to dentist before I knew I was causing the pain. Then I started putting my tongue between my teeth and now I can't stop, I will surely bite my tongue one of these days.

I have had this problem, on and off, for many years. Not only do I bite my lips but also the inside of my cheeks. My molars wreak havoc in my mouth. I go through phases of biting my tongue and/or biting my lips and inner cheeks. The problem is that I am not coordinating the closing of my jaw, while eating, and the removal of my tongue and cheeks from the area between the teeth. It is just one more coordination problem, as if we don't have enough problems. I have found that if I eat more slowly, when this is happening, I can ensure that the tongue and the surrounding tissue is not still in the way. We use our tongue and cheeks and lips to move food around in the mouth, in order to chew it all properly, before swallowing it.

I'm a bit of a lip biter I have to say. I apply vaseline occasionally to keep the lips from cracking but I eventually find myself biting again in exactly the same spot, lower lip to the right. I usually grind it off with my teeth and resolve never to bit my lips again. Futile. Do you think this is connected to PD?
