You might try a stationary bike. You can start slowly and progress with less chance for falling as with walking. It also has been used successfully to enhance walking for people that have freezing issues.

Thanks. I hadn't thought of that - I was thinking about a treadmill but it makes more sense with a bike as I have freezing issues

The standard to help freezing is to increase rpm's to 80-90, but it is not wise to start too aggressively... work up to it. Good luck

I have freezing episodes too but I have never had one while walking on the treadmill. But I do hold on for safety.

2 other activities that you can try if available to you are swimming and use of a rowing machine. In any event, as said previously, you will have to work up to it somewhat slowly. Also, make yourself walk , adding additional distance each day, even if it is slow and difficult.

I would only add that I have found that using a "spin" bike to be superior to using my road bike on a trainer or a standard stationery bike. The spin bike platform is solid and stable and more importantly, the pedal stroke is so smooth. I find that it is easier to pedal high RPMs. I find that I can spin for 45 min. to an hour instead of struggling to go 15 to 20 min. on a trainer or stationery bike.

I don't want to discourage you but have you seen your neuro about adjusting your Meds? I had the same problem after I had an illness. I could barely walk. I'm doing great now that my Meds have been adjusted. I'm enjoying my stationary bike too and I agree that exercise is absolutely necessary.

Yes, saw him yesterday - referred to Physio , dietitian , and an MRI on my lower back which really is affecting mobility

Oh and he reviews my meds as the requip/madopar combination just doesn't seem to be working so gonna try amantadine ?

Another alternative to a stationary bike is 'cycle' that can be used sitting in a chair - no danger of falling off. They were invented for people to use in the office!

It's worth getting a good one, as cheap ones are too light and tend to move. We have one called a MagneTrainer- it can be adjusted to suit how hard you want to peddle.

Tough as it is, move anyway you can even it's just walking around the house. This year has been really hard on me and my Parkinson's symptoms have gotton worse. I started with Plantar Fasciitis, followed by shingles on the back of my thigh to my knee and then I fell and broke and badly sprained my ankle. I'm currently working with a personal trainer, chiroprator and having cold laser therapy on my feet, ankle, neck and back. I would never have guessed that Parkinson's would have so many facets, PAIN included. Best to you. I hope you regain your strength quickly. Just don't expect to much to soon. Hugs, Terri
