DIETARY GUIDELINES for higher doses of COCONUT OIL

This post is a response to questions which have been raised in response to my earlier posts: Jun 14, 2013 ... Coconut oil has improved my life & July 13, 2013 ... Coconut Oil for Parkinson's - "non-clinical" trial.

This report must be abbreviated. A more detailed discussion is available at

tending-the-iris.us/coconut...

Dr Mary Newport has put a lot of effort into understanding good practice and providing guidance for including high doses of coconut oil in your daily diet, reported in COCONUT OIL DIETARY GUIDELINES AND SUGGESTIONS. This 2-page report is loaded with facts and good advice, but some find it too academic. To help you get into the mood, we provide the section headings and some key comments.

- HOW CAN COCONUT OIL BE USED IN THE DIET?

- WHAT IS THE NUTRIENT CONTENT OF COCONUT OIL? DOES IT CONTAIN OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS?

- WHAT KIND OF COCONUT OIL SHOULD I USE?

“… If you like the odor of coconut, look for products called “virgin,” “organic,” or “unrefined,” which are generally more expensive than “refined,” or “all natural,” or “RBD” (refined, bleached and deodorized) coconut oil, which do not have an odor. The oil itself is tasteless. …”

- WHY DOES THE COCONUT OIL LOOK “CLOUDY”?

- WHAT OTHER COCONUT PRODUCTS CONTAIN COCONUT OIL?

- WHO SHOULD TRY THIS?

- HOW MUCH SHOULD I TAKE?

“If you take too much oil too fast, you may experience indigestion, cramping or diarrhea. To avoid these symptoms, take with food and start with 1 teaspoon coconut oil or MCT oil per meal, increasing slowly as tolerated over a week or longer. If diarrhea develops drop back to the previous level. For most people, the goal would be to increase gradually to 4-6 tablespoons a day, depending on the size of the person, spread over 2-4 meals. ”

- WHAT ABOUT CHILDREN?

- DO I NEED TO BE WORRIED ABOUT GAINING WEIGHT FROM THE EXTRA FAT IN THE DIET?

- DOES COCONUT OIL INCREASE CHOLESTEROL?

- SOME OTHER BENEFITS OF COCONUT OIL AND OTHER COCONUT PRODUCTS

- FOOD IDEAS and some recipes

My own experience is that I am able to handle 6-8T per day without stomach upset, provided that I use the “Pure” Coconut Oil (no flavor, I like LouAna). If I use Virgin or Organic, I get stomach distress at 4T.The following Vanilla Shake recipe provides ample buffering for me:

Gently melt 2-3T Pure CO in 1/3c milk

Prepare 2/3c cold milk with a few ice cubes and (optional)

- Add a few drops of vanilla for flavor.

- Add quality instant coffee

- Add protein powder and fibre (psyllium will reduce cholesterol)

Add the warm milk with the melted CO to the cold milk mixture and

MIX IMMEDIATELY in a mini-blender to a frothy state.

If you move quickly, this provides a smooth frothy shake. If you tarry on the mixing, the CO will harden in the cold milk and it tastes like you ground up a candle!

The protein version is a complete low-carb meal.

Drink the simple vanilla (or coffee) shake 10-15 minutes before a meal and you will be happy with half-portions. This is giving me good weight control.

How do you believe it's improved your life? I've tried a spoonful a day for a while, but don't see much result.

Hi Jash,

Are you taking 1 tablespoon or 1 teaspoon per day.

There have been several books published which both have recommended dosage rates of 6-8 tablespoons per day for serious diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. You have to slowly increase the dosage, in case you run into digestion problems. You also have to cut back on carbohydrate consumption or you'll likely gain weight. Also I think you should check you blood work after a month or so, to make sure you're not hurting yourself. I can almost guarantee if you had cholesterol problems, they will be gone.

As for how it improves your life, dare for just a moment to think what it would be like if your symptoms slowly start to fade away. I highly recommend keeping a daily journal of any changes you notice, because you'll be surprised how easy it is to take your improvements for granted.

Please read the books Stop Alzheimer's Now and Alzheimer's Disease What If There Was A Cure, so you understand ketone therapy.

Ketone therapy does not necessarily require coconut oil. Also, I wish those who are so enthusiastic about ketone therapy would consider what this kind of diet will do to your kidneys, not to mention your liver. Kidney failure is a horrible way to die, but of course you can be kept alive for years on dialysis. It would be a very hard to choose between Alzheimer's disease and kidney failure (or liver failure)

Hi ldq1997,

You have every right to be concerned about the impact of coconut oil on your personal health. I encourage people to conduct research and consult with your family physician before anyone makes a decision on making coconut oil a part of their diet.

There have been numerous studies on the overall health of cultures that rely on coconut as a main staple of their daily diet and they are actually healthier than Western cultures. I submit the following as one example:

Coconut oil has actually been researched for quite awhile, starting with the health pioneer and dentist, Weston A. Price. In the 1930's, Dr. Price studied the diets of native people in the South Pacific, and found that a main source of their diet came from coconut products, and yet they were extremely healthy and trim, despite their high intake of saturated fat. This conclusion was a gross contradiction of the Western thought process at the time, and therefore was much overlooked. But fortunately Dr. Price’s research was corroborated by results published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 1981, that demonstrated the health benefits of high saturated fat intake through coconut oil, and its positive effects on vascular health.

Coconut oil is not necessarily a part of a ketogenic diet. I am referring to the dangers of a ketogenic diet, which does not necessarily have anything to do with coconut oil. I don't think the cultures which use coconut oil as a large part of their diets necessarily follow ketogenic diets.

Hi ldq1997,

Sorry, I must have misunderstood your comment because, I didn't see any reference to ketogenic diet in this post until now. Everything I've read suggests that a team of qualified medical professionals is required to support a ketogenic diet.

Hi Jash,

Thanks for the question. I speak mostly from personal experience which is detailed in the post Jun 14, 2013 ... Coconut oil has improved my life and on my site

tending-the-iris.us/coconut...

I am very interested in your question. Am I just lucky or is there a general benefit?

That is the reason that I am willing to send the time in the poll and data analysis discussed in (July 13, 2013) ... Coconut Oil for Parkinson's - "non-clinical" trial.

I am Happy to hear that you are having good results. How big are your capsules? Most are 1000mg = 1 g = 1/16 T (tablespoon).

Many PWP use 2T to 6T daily to get best results (you should iinicrease thie dose gradually).

Please consider joining our non-cliniical trials

.

A word of caution. For Alzheimer's treartment many are substituting some MCT oli for Coconut oil. I have a couple of reports thatt this does not work so well for PWP. I suggest that you stick with CO until you establish your benefit and before you experiment with anything else.

1000g is1kg=2.2 lbs Perhaps you mean 1000mg=1g

For most, movement, expression and smell improve before tremor. Everyone is different.
