The importance of this study is that for the first time the answer to why the Ketogenic diet works has been discovered. The study applies to epilepsy and autism, both NEUROLOGICAL diseases as is PD. I will be posting more studies done by researcher s in the hopes of providing solid information for supporting Kdiet as a valid medical treatment in hopes of allowing PWP's an alternative to pharma and to educate about the importance of good diet and its health benefits as part of a good health plan that can be accomplished and controlled individually. More to come-

What is this diet ,where can I read about it.thanks.

I hate the word diet as it makes sound like just another fad diet and it really is a medical treatment. If you google Ketogenic Diet it is a good starting point. I will be posting more information and resources to help people expand there thinking about taking charge of their health decisions. I have spent hundreds of hours researching and reading books, research reports, medical articles, etc. I read both the good and the bad and judge for myself what is important and what is snake oil. The Kdiet is not something you jump into without researching it. For one thing, there are different Kdiets for different illnesses that needs to be looked at. It is not a one diet fits all.

In its simplest form, feeding your body from keytones verses glucose(sugars) is what you need to understand. I will be posting info on a regular basis to help anyone with the research that should be done.

Thanks for the info navyrat, I am always looking for info and you seem to have done so much research, and I will be following your research,My parkinsons visitor says that the parkinsons research team here in Edinburgh are quite excited by latest developments but cant tell me any facts. They always seem so close and I despair at times and she reminds me that this is the place where penicillin ,and anesthetics were discovered by Lister, Fleming, and Simpson, Once again thanks for the info, and sorry I called it a diet.

wikipedia has an article on ketogenic diet which is almost completely about preventing epileptic seizures in children. The one mention of PD is this:

"There is evidence from uncontrolled clinical trials and studies in animal models that the ketogenic diet can provide symptomatic and disease-modifying activity in a broad range of neurodegenerative disorders including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease,[20]"

I wouldn't recomment to my husband that he undertake this until there are "controlled" clinical trials, (vs. the uncontrolled clinical trials mentioned above." Others may do as they see fit.

page 3 of this National Institute of Health article has an article on an uncontrolled study for PD. ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articl...

Hi quirkyme- if you noticed the date on the study it is from 2008. A lot of info since then. The Trinity College study is a major step forward in understanding why the Kdiet works. You should also know that a simplified Kdiet is simply a good healthy eating program and is simple and delicious with MANY health benefits. I am on the strictest form of Kdiet as I am starving my cancer into death and it is working. If I were to wait for clinical studies I might not be around to read it. As I have said before, it should not be done without proper medical oversight if you already have a major disease such as PD or Cancer. It is something you can start very gradually and see how it goes and as I said it makes sense from a healthy eating perspective.

If you google Duke University Ketogenic Diet Dr. Wasserman has a 38 minute video that is very helpful in understand Ketogenics. He is one of the Doctors From Duke wellness clinic. This video is not specific to PD but is worth watching and anyone with diabetes or overweight issues this is a must see!

Thanks quirkyme. I am sure you will like the video. It is a good starting point. I am 66 and I know older people are set in there ways but I am not about to give up the ship yet. Enjoy the day.

I'm 69 and am not only my husband's caregiver but his advocate and healthmanager.

PD is a disease of losing function and cancer, well we all know about cancer. The goal is not hope as a blind hope but one of maintaining his dignity and sense of self-worth and self-confidence as well as lots of moments of pleasure. Pleasure gives one good memories to hold up to one's self when gloomy thoughts come in.

It is every bit as important for you to be in good health and frame of mind as I am sure your husband notices all you do and stresses knowing that you are his caretaker. Every article on PD says there is no cure and is always progressive. I try to attend as many PD seminars as possible and I see and hear everyone discussing their meds and how they are working or not. We all know that are doses have to be increased and new meds added as the disease progresses. I am not willing to except that because that is succumbing to PD itself and relinquishing all hope. The brain has the ability to heal itself if properly nourished which on a western diet just doesn't happen enough to make a difference. If for no other reason, try changing to whatever type of healthy food input you desire, it will give hope and a change in your lifestyles that you both can benefit from, after all we are what we eat.

Navyrat,

How can anyone, but admire you for your determination to improve your PD situation and of course, the more pressing challenge of cancer.

Just as well that people like Dr.Terry Wahls, who has MS and was wheelchair bound didn't listen to the naysayers. Instead she carried out research on the Internet and applied rigidly the information she learned there. As a consequence, she can now ride a bicycle, ride horses and walk several miles without canes. Just as well she didn't wait for results from controlled studies, before attempting to reverse her symptoms. She is not cured of her MS and still has to watch what she eats otherwise it flails up, but she in a much better place that before. She is a real trailblazer, just as you are, so never give up hope of improving your situation. Already, you have changed some people's perceptions who visit this site and for that, I salute you.

Kind regards

Norton

navyrat,

By now you may recognize me as a cautious friendly. I am also a retired professional scientist.I offer the following comments as my take on what has been accomplished, and what remains to be done. FIrst, congratulations on an interesting find.

The most important issue is that the contributions are to Medical Science, rather than to Medicine. Dr (PhD) Masino is a rat psychologist who has special skills and techniques for imaging rat brains. She and her team have applied her techniques to obtain new (partial) understanding of how Ketogenic Therapy influences seizures in epileptic rats.

HOPE0: We can achieve more complete understanding of the process for epileptic rats.

HOPE1: This understanding is applicable to epileptic humans,

HOPE2: If applicable, someone will find a way to use it for improved medical treatment for epileptic humans,

HOPE3,4,...: It will be found to be applicable, and someone will find a way to use it in improved medical treatment for PD.

These many steps will require interest and dedicated activity by many scientists and doctors.

thhis area is far from my expertise. I asked: Is the Neurological community impressed?

FACT1. There are rankings of the top 40 medical programs, and medical journals. Authors usually attempt to have important work published in ranked journals. The authors of this paper all come from unranked programs and the paper is published in an unranked journal.

FACT2: I can find no evidence on the internet that any researcher outside of the original team (and department) has pursued this line of investigation.(SINCE 2011)

FACT3: The single follow-on effort contributes to HOPE0.

My detective work indicates that it may be a long time before collateral benefits for PD are realized. Of course, I also realize that historically, some ignored work has led to Nobel Prizes!

AND, I would be delighted if you are a better detective and can set me straight. In that case, no need to be gentle; I deserve what I get!

PS I have discussed my benefits from Coconut Oil, and not my remaining afflictions - left hand tremor and double vision. I work hard to present a clean text. Tremor corrupts the typing and double vision corrupts the proof reading. :-)

EXAMPLE: I have discussed ny enefits from Coconut Oiiil, but not my remaing afflicaitoins.

Thank you for your due diligence and I am cautious and deliberate also. Norton enlightened me when I first asked the question if there was any Agent Orange PD vets out there and have always admired his interest is stirring the mind of others. The hyper Kdiet is working for me and I have found coconut oil and raw coconut an important part of the Kdiet and I enjoy the taste. Most PWP's are elderly and set in there ways as am I. But looking at the future with health issues worsening by the month Norton convinced me to look outside the box. I have a younger pcp at the va and he convinced me to give the Kdiet a chance after researching everything I could find on it. Is it medically proven to the extent our pills are? NO. Big pharma will not allow that to happen and it doesn't matter. The point being, clean air, pure water, non altered food that is natural to our brain and exercise and an open mind seems to be a pretty good pill to take with enormous benefits which I am only beginning to harvest and my mindset is opening up with hope and that we all can use.
