Hi Cyprus, I had my gallbladder removed in February this year and the very next day I ended up with the same pain! I have had the same pain a few times so I went off to the hospital, whilst at the hospital I had scans and an MRI to which they could not find anything, I also used to get back ache. I have googled this and found that after gallbladder removal people get SOD- sphincter of oddi dysfunction which causes the same pain as gall stones. After various visits to the hospital, the specialist and the doctors the doctor decided that he would gave me amitriptyline for the back pain. I am glad to report that I haven't had hardly any pain in my back and no gallbladder like pains in almost 3 weeks.

I had my residual gallbaldder removed nearly three years ago and still have that same pain in my back. They think that I have nerve damage. I too am on amitriptyline, but unfortunately I am still in pain despite being on a huge amount of pain releif. I went to the pain management clinic yesterday and they are putting me on a mediation course to help with relaxation!

What pain relief are you using Maisie? I was taking morphine based tablets but had to stop as they can trigger the sphincter symptoms and one of the symptoms is back ache.

thanks for getting back to me, im on amitrptyline already for another condition i have and i too am on morphine. I had my gallbladder out about 4yrs ago and have always had pain but this past yr it is awful coming in really strong waves that gets unbareable. Glad the amityptyline is helping you Elainey and good luck with the meditation Maisie.

The pain has only stopped since I have stopped taking the morphine tablets, I take tramadol now if I get pain or when I forget to take the amitriptyline. I would recommend that you stop the morphine tablets to see if that gives you any relief, hope your pain free soon.

Hi Elainey stopped the morphine tablets but to no avail and my other conditions made worse, still worth a try, am having an ultra sound scan on tue to see if any stones have formed, didnt think they could once the gallbladeder gone, learn something new every day.

Hi Cyprus96, sorry to here your still in pain, I had another episode of pain after doing exercise in the evening, feeling a little better now, I'm so over it wish they would just find out what causes this awful pain, good luck with your scan and I didn't know that about the stones either. Good luck.
