Greater Trochanteric hip bursitis

I've been seeing a physio for the above, and gluteal medius tendinopathy. I'm going through the menopause, and she said she sees a lot of women my age with this problem.

My GP has sent me for x-rays of my hip and then will refer me to a Musculoskeletal service, dependent upon what this throws up.

My symptoms are that I am having very disturbed sleep, and can't sleep on my side (either side) as I get aching in my outer thigh area, and have to sleep on my back. I can't do my usual exercise, which is running around 5k a week and walking - anything that involves 'pushing away' with my foot radiates into my thigh.

I'm particularly stiff in the mornings and when I've been sat for a while.

This seems to have now progressed further down my middle outer thigh, and less so in my glute. I have had two bruises now on my outer thigh which are tender and lumpy to touch - there's no heat or pain, just tenderness.

My GP is currently on about a three week delay to see patients, and I wondered if anyone else with this pain had experienced the bruising/small lumps under the skin?

Would there be a tinch of bursitis hidden in there?I get pain on the " point " of the hip, not allowing me to sleep on my side. Sometimes a rolled up towel arranged in a circle, takes enough pressure off, to allow some relief.

I hope you get some success soon.

Ibuprofen helps me a lot.

Good luck.

Yes it definitely does help - I've been using Voltarol Gel and not sure if I can take Ibruprofen with that too? I've been sleeping on my back with a pillow under my legs for support and a rolled up part of the duvet stuffed under my left hand side - it really is trial and error!!

You can take ibuprofen with voltarol gel ok.

Try using a heat pad in your bed. This helps me although I still move around all night but I feel the heat does help.

I second the use of heat. When I had a problem last year (not this one but similar) I was running on three, one for my lower back, one for my thigh and one for my hip.

Hi. I've suffered from bursitis for a good few years on and off ,sadly more on than off.

I receive cortisone injections into both hips.

My last injections had little or no effect . My doctor has put me on Naproxen to help with the pain along with Omeprazole to counteract the damage Naproxen can cause to the stomach.

I'm also attending the hospital for pelvic x-ray.

Heat and ice treatment along with resting up help ease up the symptoms.

I have psoriatic arthritis which attacks my tendons …. Its a monster. Stretching is a must even if it hurts and heat. Hope you get well soon.

I've had this for nearly 3 years, the pain travels from my hip to my knee, I attended musculoskeletal appts, physio gave me stretching excersises then I had a steroid injection in January which worked well but of course it wore off after3-4 months. I have moved house to a different area but as luck would have it (or so I thought) my new GP does steroid injections so he gave me one in September but this time it made it worse, its calmed down a bit now but I don't know what to do next. My only bit of advice is if you want to sleep on your side put a cushion between your knees.
