Naproxen is used to relieve pain from various conditions such as headache, muscle aches, tendonitis, dental pain, and menstrual cramps. It also reduces pain, swelling, and joint stiffness caused by arthritis, bursitis, and gout attacks. This medication is known as a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It works by blocking your body's production of certain natural substances that cause inflammation.

Hopefully by the end of your treatmment your back will be better.

my GP says take Paracetamol. Not helping so far

Hi

So sorry you are struggling. Naproxen didn't do for me. I was referred to pain management and was referred to orthopaedics. MRI scan followed, degeneration of the facet joint. I'm due pain injections for gastro in a couple of months (should have had them last week but blood sugar was too high) then the joint with these others will be 3 months later!!they are at different hospitals but after going to merge at one to make traveling easier, luckily hubby, family or friends take me so I'm lucky I do have many conditions which give me pain Pm me if you need to. . Please take care of yourself Lynne

The removal of pain sounds and feels nice. Have you removed what has been the cause of the pain? The purpose of pain is to point out that you have done or are doing something the body does not like.

I have a theory that a lot of back pain can be caused by how we put on under pants or knickers. When doing this action its is possible that one tries to bend the back too much. This in turn leads to damaging activity which results in back pain.

Work on bending from the hip joint and try not bending the back when engaged in the activity of putting on under pants or knickers.

Always like your posts and replies johnsmith! However what do you do if the condition you have is not of your own doing? Hereditary or trauma?

A very nice question. We have to learn to engage the brain. I say learn. We know about doing schoolwork and exams. The engagement of the brain in movement requires different skills. We need to ....

The dot, dot, dot stands for lots of work. What is this lots of work? It involves being present in the moment and disengaging the brain we have used for schoolwork and exams.

It involves a lot of letting go and letting gravity do the work. It involves not holding on to set movement patterns and allowing movement and gravity to work together.

Moving meditation is I think a good way to start the process of engagement with ourselves in the present moment.

youtube.com/watch?v=_IFvabl...

Just been through a slight dose of mental ill health over the last three to four weeks due to sleep disruption and a few other events taking place which I had no control over. So brain has to re-engage with things.

The question you have asked is a very important one. It is not an easy one to answer. It is a question which has to be continually be worked at. Events happen which change the answer and approach to the question. When that happens we have to ride the storm and then start again with entirely new ways of looking at things.

Not sure how well I have answered the question.

Wow thank you for this post. I am currently undertaking a Mindfulness Well-being and Self Care course at the local Adult Learning Centre. I have never heard of Mindfulness walking but I will give it a try. I have Fibromyalgia, IBS, hearing loss due to German measles and I suffer with anxiety and depression. I now also have diabetes like my father and all his family in Southern Italy. I have been a vegetarian for 40 years and I am trying to cut down on my carb intake and sugar whether from fruit or other sources. I binge eat and I used to love chocolate, crisps, pizza, chips, full fat cheese, ice cream, biscuits and alcohol. I am trying to lose weight slowly and be more mindful in everything I do. I am a widow, losing my second husband to cancer and heart failure 3.5 years ago. I had to give up my job to look after him, watched him dying, arranged a Fire Service funeral as he was a Fire Officer. Then had to sort out his will. I divorced my first husband and then became a single parent to my daughter my only child. I now realise how strong I am. I am ready to go back to work despite the daily pain. I am completing an online course to be a life coach. Pain is such a debilitating illness and we all need to learn different coping strategies to lead our lives.

Yeah I see your point about the removal of pain that’s why I was reluctant in taking naproxen however it’s also a anti inflammatory so I was thinking it would clear up any inflammation and heal quicker alongside some lower back exercise I’ve been given ,wouldn’t know about your theory but any bending I’m always cautious about. Cheers for replying

Sorry to hear of your back problems. I have also had a poorly back since June of this year which resulted also in sciatica....ouch! thankfully now gone. Is this your first real problem with your back or have you had issues before. I pulled my back really bad a couple years ago doing gardening and was in bed for some time in agony. At that time I took every pain killer known to man but found even the stronger ones prescribed by my doctor did nothing but spaced me out and literally made me feel so sick I had to stop taking them. I then in desperation contacted my local health shop and talked to their health consultant and she immediately asked me if I had any magnesium tablets at home. I did not so hubby went down to get them. She advised I checked to make sure with my doctor that magnesium was ok to take if I was on any other prescribed meds. She told me that magnesium is a natural muscle relaxant and that in cases of back pain, many physicians recommend a magnesium-rich diet or magnesium supplements. A 200 mg daily supplement of magnesium can make a noticeable difference for many who suffer from back pain. I immediately started taking them and after 2 days I noticed the "ouch" pain had subsided and eventually the pain relaxed to the point where I could sit and walk more comfortably. I now take it daily but I am sure if you look on the internet and research use of magnesium you will get more information. I hope you soon get better I know it is a very frustrating and wearing issue and the most soul destroying pain. good luck and I hope you get the relief you are seeking...let me know

Wow great feed back, will certainly look into that in tablet form however after reading your recommendation on magnesium I stopped off at our local Costco warehouse to see if they sold them, all they had was a magnesium oil 🤔 going to try that as well.

I also pulled my back about 8year ago trying to uproot 4 conifer trees in our garden and since then it has probably flared up 5 times ,usually clears up after 2/3 weeks however this time seems to be getting more regular and lasting longer periods 😤.

I’m grateful for your advice and pleased it worked for you because at the time of this painful period you can’t see that things will (should) improve.

Thanks again

My mum woke up earlier this year in agony with her hip, it just came on suddenly but she could hardly move, she was given naproxen it took a while but it has settled down. I don’t think she takes the pills any more. The only thing is please make sure you take them with food or milk as I believe they are like other anti inflammatories that can give you a stomach ulcer if not taken with food, if you get indigestion oh are recommended to stop them. I can’t take any I\anti inflammatory Ed as I have a very sensitive stomach.

Hope they settle your pain for you.

Take care

Thanks for the feedback much appreciated,I did hear it can cause stomach ulcers ☹️.

Medication solves one problem but can cause other problems ☹️.

At least it sorted your mums problem.

Thanks again

It did not help me but then it was never going to help in my case. One thing you have to be careful about is your stomach when taking this medicine. My husband took them and took lansoprezole with it to counteract the effect on his stomach. (Short term it should be ok).

UXB1 profile image
UXB1 in reply to Emma2017

Thanks for your feedback,I did hear about the side affects with the stomach so will not take for more than 3 days (2 a day).

The pain has already eased up so fingers crossed it’s done its job and I can move about again.

Hello ! I dont know about Naxprosen, but i take Palmitoylenanolamide and it took away a lower back pain and shoulder pain i had for half a year in less than a week never to come back in six weeks now.

It is a totally natural substance which your body produces for pain management.

Please read about it. It is sold OTC . I get mine on amazon.

Good luck.

Hi and yes it is a standard inflammatory i believe and not lightly to cure anything but could assist a disc or something going back into position . just because they say its muscular and not radial (nerve) it is still very disabling and makes one quite physically week, immobile and desire to lay down is great The trick is to lay down until muscles relax then do some stuff active as poss not to physical keep the muscles relaxed as poss so what ever is out of position can move back . You wont sort it just laying down or with tense muscles, if it keeps up see doc again if it something out of place you will prob have a memorable moment when moves back and should be good as before again if not get it checked.

Iv had back ache for 50 years due to injure. when it goes out of place its bloody annoying when it goes back you realize just how disabling it was Hope that helps its the best advice i got thins you sort of sense what will help and i have more than a few people pulling my leg literally my right one mostly just to try and get it to click back Best of luck dont panick it should sort its self but don,t let it linger.

Be mello peace and tranquility to you mate Maxv4

Co codomol are useful as well as naproxien at same time

Hi sorry this is so late not been on site for a bit. Apart from the rest then exercise

Hang from a chin up bar that needs to be high so not bending your legs once hanging focus

on relaxing , think internally. and try to lower your hips . Relax focus lower and you will be surprised, I don't think i ever got it to move back, but it seems to give it more room to maneuver makes you taller for a while as well . Its easy and really is wort doing

Hi Max , there are good exercises for a slipped disc. I poo pooed it at first but a friend showed me an exercise which puts mine back from time to time . I also keep a heated pad in my back for support when sitting and lying . If i'm out even my hard small handbag does the trick. I keep a small firm cushion in the car. He doctor will give you sheets of exercises , they all do the same thing. I had a slipped disc for a year and didnt know what it was . I worked too physically , i did care work and it was agony as you can imagine. It does slip out occasionally but now i know what to do. Of course it may be different for you. KT

Hi ,my doctor also gave me a sheet of exercises to do but I’m not sure if they work as I feel worse once I’ve done them, that makes me very cautious and I suppose tense when doing them🤔 .

I like the ideas of the cushion and heated pads.

Nice to know you know what to do when you’re disc dose slip.

Thanks so much for your feedback, this app is great for getting ideas how to control pain .

Thanks again

Hi UXB , i think you need to stop the exercises and go back to your doctor if you have more pain after your exercise , just to check . But see the other things i wrote about cbd oil , magnesium , acv etc , etc . They all seem to help , if i miss one for a few days the difference shows . Now the cold weather is upon us i think its important to wrap up really well arm underwear under woollies and coats . But its good to get out for a while especially in the sun for vit D. I was prescribed that by my rheumatologist as i have osteomyalcia , which means my bones break rather easily. I also have fibromyalgia and take things for energy . They may not be relevant here.

God bless , i hope you find something useful for managing pain here . K T

Dear UXB1,

i have lower back pain since i had a slipped disc thirty years ago.

I have naproxen and have used it once or twice but i cant take it regularly because of other meds. i have been using cbd oil for over a year now and couldnt be without it. I take paracetamol with it , the cbd enhances its effect. I also use an electric heated pad ( Bauer ) from Amazon . Since i take a lot of meds i use herbal things in addition . T urmeric with black pepper in capsules or in food when i cook it , ginger , Braggs apple cider vinegar, i only manage 1 dessert spoon with water and other things . Bromelian is good too , i have tablets and i have fresh pineapple sometimes . I have other things for energy ( for fibro) .

I get the cbd from Holland and Barrett , they advise on dosage . You start low and build it up. I think it also helps me with sleep. I do hope this helps , God bless . KT.

I briefly tried naproxen 2 years back, but not long enough to give you a definite answer to it's effectiveness.Suffered stomach ulcers(wasn't given the medication to protect stomach),so now doctor (and me!)are reluctant to try Nsaid again.
