Hi I broke my ankle 2 weeks ago and I have a unfit for work note from the hospital that’s valid to mid October. I have a sturdy fracture and so I have a walking boot on and to put as much weight as possible on it.
Has anyone ever had this type of fracture and gone back to work early? I’m not in pain when I walk on it and have the use of crutches if I need them. To be honest I’m just so bored at home and I could really do with having full working pay back. My duties would need to be changed at work which wouldn’t be a problem. Has anyone ever done this?

Think you would be better discussing this with your gp. I believe they can give sick notes saying what you are fit for, but you don't want to run the risk of further damage to your ankle. Don't think it would be a good idea without your Gp s agreement. I did this with a broken rib and managed to work full time on light duties.
Hi. If you return to work early yiu will need to get your Gp to do a 'maybe fit for work' note. Different tick on same form. They would add recommendations like shorter hours/different duties. Without this your employer shouldn't let you back as it would impact their employer liability insurance if you further injured yourself. Irrespective of that, I'd speak to your Gp. Speedy recovery!
Hi, thanks for that. I did speak to my GP last week and she said that I didn’t need a fit for work note if I wanted to go back early. However before I spoke to her my employer said I’d need one so I’m a little confused.
I agree with the others, speak to your GP first to get the 'fit note' right. But on a psychological basis, everyone is different and being bored at home might actually slow recovery down!
I have had three lots of surgery on my feet in the last few years, each one similar to the others. If I was working outside the home I would have been signed off for 6 weeks,( I don't work outside the home, I do volunteer work online as well as being a PhD student) The first one, I needed to take more time to heal (there was some nerve damage in the heel to heal!) and it took over a month for me to feel like I was fit again. However, the second one went much more smoothly and a week later I was giving a presentation to 70 people! Yes, I was careful and kept the foot elevated but I was a lot more able to do things so I listened to my body. Third time was somewhere in between.
So listen to your body, and if you think going back to work would work for you, talk to your GP and do it!
