Chest pain (teenager)

So , I am a female , 17 years of age and for about a month now I have had chest pain localised on the left side , above my Breast and sometimes in the centre and side of my Breast , I visited the doctors and told her I was feeling like this for about a month now , she checked my heart rate it was fine , she also checked my blood pressure and told me I had a little High blood pressure

Next week I have to have a 24hr monitor fitted so she can get a average reading for my blood pressure , I was wondering what the chest pain could be and could it be heart related at my age

Hi just red your blog it could be chest wall pain in other words muscular pain but feels like heart pain, try getting GTN in a spray red colour plastic bottle as it does not sting under your tounge thanks David (Ironside)

That’s what I was thinking , I’ve never heard of GTN , I will have too give it a try

in reply to Elliebutler2207

Hi GTN is for when you have angina wich is a hart problem BLOCKED VIENS and the GTN open up your arteries and lets the blood glow easier. You put 3 spreys under your tounge and let it work should sort it out in 10 minutes but gives you a bit of a headache hope this sorts your problem out for you but do see your doc over the problem

Thankyou , I will do some research and get some professional advice , Thankyou for helping as I have never heard about anything like that before , yes I will make another appointment to discuss

in reply to Elliebutler2207

Take care hope to here the outcome soon ironside yes im in a wheelchair

in reply to

That's a little OTT for an undiagnosed complaint in a 17 year old Hidden GTN spray is not something to just give a go just in case it's blocked arteries, again, in a 17 year old!

2 Sprays under your tongue not 3 ironside please!!!

Maybe you should see how long ago it was and there have been a lot of neg comments so what.lknow what l explained in the beginning and that was to seek medical advice before using any drug

It could be Costochondritis? I’ve had sternum pain for 7 weeks now but it radiates to collarbones. Best to get checked but this can cause chest discomfort. Hope you feel better soon.

Oh yes I have heard of Costochondritis off many people as it sounds like that , I didn’t think it was my heart as I’ve had it about a month now , maybe longer , and the doctor checked my heart rate , I was wondering if there is any tips that you could give me as I’ve never heard about it before

JaneN40 profile image

If it is Costochondritis then avoid lifting anything heavy as the strain aggravates it. I’ve taken Ibroprophen but not too often as it can aggregate stomach. Just rest and try a non-inflammatory diet, camomile tea. I’ve been told tumeric and ginger help with inflammation. Always check with your doctor as I’m not a medical expert.

It won’t be easy to GNT, and sometimes it can cause serious headaches from it I’ve had this for 30 ish years and I was given GNT but it didn’t help because, what you have is inflammation of your joints in your rib cage please speak with your GP before you take any meds. I try to relax and rest and you’ll feel the difference.

Elliebutler2207 in reply to Philip

Thanks Philip , I will ask my doctor about it and hopefully it’s nothing serious or heart related and that will definitely make me more relaxed

You really are young to be going through all this pain, I used to get rushed in Ambulance to A&E because of these pains as they can mimic heart attack. You’ll be ok.

Philip.

Hope so , thanks

Hi Ellie,

Have you been diagnosed with any inflammatory conditions like rheumatoid arthritis or ankylosing spondylitis? Both of those can cause these chest pains; our friend has AS, she was finally diagnosed in her early teens, and she's been rushed to A&E with what she described as crushing chest pains causing her to cry out in pain (if you knew her you;d know that's not her at all). She was finally told that it's a yet another part of her AS, oh joy of joys!

So, don't be taking any meds that haven't been prescribed for you (like GTN spray, at your age, unless you're morbidly obese, you won't have blocked arteries!) and make sure that you tell your GP when you see them exactly what happens. You shouldn't have raised BP at your age either, unless you were anxious about the actual appointment with your doctor, which they should have taken into consideration.

What meds do you take? (If any) Some can raise the blood pressure and give palpitations.

No I have not been diagnosed with any inflammatory conditions and I the doctor didn’t say much apart from getting the blood pressure sorted first , so my appointment to get the 24hr blood pressure monitor is next week and it’s just. A waiting game to see if it was high just on that day or not , i am on buscopan for IBS and paracetamol and ibuprofen for terrible headaches , but had the all clear on a head scan , as I suffer really bad headaches , I used to be on the pill but I came off it at Christmas time

Well that explains a few things here Ellie, glad read this now.

Stay off the pill get plenty sleep and stay hydrated. Try and eat a healthy diet too which does not aggravates your IBS. Secondly would stay off painkillers if your headache is light. They can aggravate your stomach in the long run. I had a heart attack and was told not to take Ibuprofen. Any way this post here explains a lot!!!!

Do you have hypermobile joints, or stretchy skin? There is a connective tissue disorder called Ehlers-Danlos (there are several different types but the main on that most people have is hyper mobile type) and many people have the same symptoms as you do. It might not be, but it is worth reading up on it before you see you're GP.

A GP can diagnose it using the RCGP toolkit rcgp.org.uk/clinical-and-re...

No I don’t have any of the two above , I will give it a read and have a look at the symptoms , then maybe ask my gp about it

Thankyou

Hi, I have just read your post, I also suffered with this type of sharp pain in my left breast, sternum & side I was sent to the breast clinic and given thorough checks. I then saw the consultant and he told me often hormones are to blame for pains like this and some type of hormone control often helps (the pill) I decided against this. Once I knew what the pain was and had no need to worry it settled down and got a lot better, worry & stressing make things a whole lot worse, don’t worry about your blood pressure being a little high the monitor will pick up if you really have high blood pressure as it randomly takes blood pressure readings.

Yeah I have recently came off the pill in December it was the mini pill , I was on rigevidon first in July 2018 but I had terrible headaches on it but I am now off the pill as it still caused me headaches , I have heard the pill can do this, so I will try not to worry , the 24hr blood pressure monitor is next Wednesday and then it all goes from there

Thanks for your help

My daughter is nearly 16 and suffers with all these things I’ve taken her to our A&E and when they do her observation there normal but her blood pressure is sometimes higher they normally put it down to anxiety. I’ve paid private for E.N.T and check nose throat area it’s been fine and clear . I really hope you start feeling better soon x
