I have Scoliosis in the base of the spine and my car (Peugeot 2008) is just under 2 years of the 3. The problem now is I am finding it increasingly difficult to get into and out of the car, plus opening the boot hurts too. I literally have to use a foot to open my door and need really to change early. Need to find an Auto that's higher so its easier getting in and out of that isn't going to cost an arm and a leg in advance payment. Also comfort as mine and the wife's families are miles from us. We're in Fleetwood, mine are in London, the wife's in Bristol so there is alot of long drives.
Advice on choosing cars would be a great help.
Ps... Never do any physical sports professionally or semi pro as you pay for it later. I'm only 48 and can barely walk now

I wasn't aware I had complained...far from it. And for your info I don't have a car even though I am entitled to the benefit..
Claiming DLA or PIP has nothing to do whether you worked or not. So if you are entitled to the award, or think you might be, then ask DWP for an application form.
There is no such thing as a free car every 3 yrss. You pay for it with your higher rate DLA mobility or enhanced PIP
I've been in the army, then the Marines from 18 to 42 when I first start complaining about my back and have to leave or I'd still be in Afghanistan or Sudan now. Have bullit scars on both legs and one shoulder so yeah I think maybe I don't have to justify myself to anybody why I have a mobility car. When you've been fit as a butchers dog then have it all taken from you in the space of a few years, that's what's the worst part. I hate not being able to even walk round a supermarket without problems now.
Hi ExproSi I returned my mobility car due to change in health, I have a collection of older cars 32-37years old 635csi X2 Audi 100cc(86 model auto 31k on clock original mileage) 840 BMW and an 850, Mobility accepted the return and I still got the bonus of returning it in good condition there was 26 months left on the contract, I explained the situation and that as I have an automatic transmission vehicle already I would use one from my collection and honestly they were great even offering me a larger car with auto! Tbh I did not think it was right to accept so I now use my Audi it's ok to get in and out it drives itself almost , most of all When I do Drive it I actually enjoy driving again, And the car when parked up gets admiring looks (it is definitely the car not me I look like a cross between Quasimodo and the Hobbit) lol! Seriously just be honest with the mobility team ( call them not the garage) and they will do everything if you decide to get a car of you're own they can even sort out insurance that will be cheaper than you can find on comparison sites (Blue Badge insurance LTD) hope that helps ! I had a B class Mercedes and when my condition become worse I could no longer get out of it, even had to call an Ambulance on 2 occasion to help me get out. Mobility gave me loads of options but still not suitable because of my size and lac of mobility so they sent out a special team who could then see my difficulty and arranged for me to test out a Mercedes Vito, and it was perfect as it means no bending, just slide in and slide out.
Had to get a grant and a extended lease for 5 years, but very happy 😃
Thanks for all your comments, they've all been taken on board. Got permission to change car earlier though had the £250 to pay. Just starting to look around. Saw a Vauxhall Grandland X which looks decent and I don't have to open the boot manually. Need to look some more but it looks promising and huge inside compared to what I'm used to.
We have just got a second hand Kuga, higher up and the seats are so much comfier than the C4 we had, if I were you would look at these, seem to be a little over looked so better priced second hand, no more expensive for us in insurance or mileage, and so comfy wish we had changed before but finances etc. Hope you have luck finding something soon
In NZ so don't offer to understand the term motability car. I drive an economical toyotaRactis car it's auto and higher so I can get in and out easily. I have several pain conditions so don't drive far, the furthest has been 400ks. Sometimes I can't drive and find myself back in my battery powered wheelchair which was made for my disability.
You can change it no problem. Go pick a car then call motorbility xx
If you are happy with the Peugeot look at the 3008, good car and a bit higher seating so you get up into the car instead of lowering yourself down. Also if you need it, look into getting adjustments made to the car if it's possible to help you along, motability might be able to help you with this or you might find some contacts in your monthly lifestyle magazine that they send you. Another thing that might help is a car cane, look it up online.
I don't know what the advance payment is for the 3008 but you can look on the motability website for different cars and prices etc.
Hi, I had to change my mobility car for the same reason, you can do it but you will loose out on the £250 good condition allowance you get back after the 3 years but it is worth it to get the right car for you. I had an Astra but changed it for a Mokka which is a SUV which is higher up and makes it so much easier to get in and out of.
I have a Citroën C4 Grand Picasso automatic /manual with a flappy paddle gear leavers on the steering wheel if you want to drive it in manual. It's a high up and if you get top of the range, hubby bought mine although I am eligible for the motability scheme. He thinks that this is the best of the auto's due to the way the gear box is don't ask me but he's in the trade so understands these things. You can automatically open the boot, plus it has a split opening boot. You can lower and higher the seat. You can even get in the passenger side and using a side board get into the driver seat as there isn't a console. Fuel consumption is 45 mpg around town and its a 2L engine. The only car I would swap it for is Citroën C5 estate which is what I had previously and only because the seats were more comfortable it was like sitting in an armchair, but like you it was to low down. I could get in but not out unless I had someone with me
Hi exprosi I have just been diagnosed with bilateral sciolosis do you have troubles when sitting I can't sit for longer than 5/6 mins with out being in pain. We have a vauxhall mokka high enough to be able just to get in and it's automatic that helps a lot
Yeah I'm constantly adjusting my position then getting in and out is painful as hell. Lifting the boot door too. Have a Grandland X ordered. Higher up. With boot sensor so I don't even have to touch the boot door. Long journeys I have to keep stopping and walking and stretching for a little while before continuing.
