Mollie the Collie is my beautiful 2 year old..Collie! Diagnosed with hip dysplasia a few months ago she has been receiving medicines which help rebuild the callagen around the joint.
From time to time her hip obviously causes her much pain but being the breed she is will not admit it. Vet today put her on Tramadol just like me. Yup human drug but also suitable for dogs. She only needs it approx 5 days then not again til she is bad. Could be several weeks or even months. Doggy flair up!
It is official now. I am like my dog!

Interesting Pat. My daughters collie ( rescue at 6 months from living exclusively in a shed all her life) also has hip displasia . After initial anxiety about proposed surgery they have settled on glucosamine and rest when she over does it.
Tramadol sounds extreme but I don't suppose she will be selling her spare meds down at the docks !.
Poor wee thing. I see how Bria suffers sometimes. The vet said it was probable that her mother had it and that was why the farm she was on didn't want her. Harris. The SSPCA wanted the owner prosecuted but settled for handing over of all three puppies.
I hope tramadol helps her . Last thing you need is a crippled dog.
How is David after the injections ? I am on the train to Edinburgh to get mine tonight. So anxious that the don't work as pain is pretty intolerable at the moment.
Thanks Dee. I questioned vet about drugs but she was quite happy. Metacam x 10 days with Tram as well last 4 Half strength of mine.. I have a holistic friend...drives me mad with all her alternatives to conventional meds. I think like most that hip d is hereditary. Apparently some US researcher spent his life trying to prove it is in what they eat as puppies.. Sorry mate...it is complex hereditary!
David jag not worked. Very sad. Only 3rd one ever not to work. Where now? No idea.

It was a new spot so many different reaction. Certainly getting pains in odd places. I will convince him it is working. Power of persuasion...or is it nagging
I got six injections instead of the usual four. Such a delightful surgeon who apologised for leaving his patients in Inverness in the lurch. It was very sore in two places. Think the spaces to insert the needle are now very small.
Wait and see time.
They did extra not just a new place didn't they ?

Hi Pat , nice to hear from you on this lovely rainy day in England. I thought pets were like their owners, however it proves they do get human illnesses. I used to have a cat years ago that ate curry because we did, she also liked cream cakes. mostly the cream of course. At least you can always give Mollie some of your pain releif to save vets bills. Must go bathroom renevation in progress plus garden landscaping if the rain stops. Take care both and Mollie xx
Love it. Curry eating cat!! We have 2 Collies and the younger Skye really does eat anything. BBit of competition here!
Of course Tramadol is in slow release format so can't break it into Mollie's dish and getting meds into her is a battle. You NEVER win an argument with a Collie
Sorry about the rain. Last we had was October!! Heat wave coming back so no one moves. Good excuse to do nothing!
Pat do you mold the pills into a piece of cheese or other? Ann uses the cheapest chesee slices and cuts them into strips. Then rolls MrB's pills into the cheese and offers them. He takes one sniff and gulp the cheesy pill is gone. Smooth peanut butter works well too but a bit more messy.
If you don't want to pay the expensive vet prices for tramadol give her yours. We have a black lab that has occasional hip/leg pain and the vet issued tramadol, exactly the same as mine. Plus we used to have a German shepherd x alaskan malhute with hip displacer andwas given tramadol and instead of paying there prices we gave him some of my tramadol as I got it with a pre payment certificate much cheaper. My vet knew all about it and was ok with it at the check ups

I take much stronger tramadol so my own meds wouldn't be suitable. We also live in the Canary Islands and GPs here have a very different system. Probably the best medical care in Europe but very strict on how many tablets you are given.
Hopefully if I talk very nicely to my Vet she won't charge me for next script. Tablets themselves only costs 2 Euros for a month. Mollie needs 5 days worth so potentially very cheap!
