Jaw pain getting worse

Hi All,

Im a fairly fit 35 year old male. Recently I have been experiencing increasing pain from Jaw. My jaw has always been a little dodgy, the left side (where pain is) has sometimes locked in the past and generally makes a funny noise If i open and close rapidly. Recently my jaw has really tightened up to the pint where its a struggle to open my mouth to eat. I cannot bite into anything with my front teeth anymore, and the tension has started to feed into my neck and skull.

i found this interesting article dailymail.co.uk/health/arti...

Was looking for best way to combat this issue.

I was going to start with a mouth splint to stop me from clenching my jaw.

Go see a dentist. Who will advise you or refer you to a dental hospital. Whatever you do DONT try to self treat by buying one of those boil in the bag type gum shields from the chemist or Internet. As yes I am in the dental profession

I saw my dentist. She just offered a gum guard.

Hate to say it but if this is what she recommended, that's what you need to try. She is the expert. Have you tried it?

It's sounds like Tempromandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMJD). I have it and it's really painful! Please go to your GP and ask for a referral to an Oral/Maxilliary specialist for assessment. They should be able to make you a proper splint for your teeth to help with the grinding etc. (Look in the mirror, stick your tongue out and if it has scalloped sides to it then it's a sign you grind your teeth).

I have botox injections every 3-4 months which have made a tremendous difference to my quality of life. I still get pain and it can be pretty painful but nothing to what I experienced prior to starting the treatment.

It was while having an assessment with the Oral/Max consultant that someone actually confirmed the suspicions I'd had for years ie I had Fibromyalgia. It was due to that appointment that my GP finally sent me to see a Rheumatologist.

I had really good advice from my dentist about how to unlock my jaw when it got really tight (and it wasn't the way I would have thought to do it). Dentists can also usually arrange xrays or MRIs of the jaw if they think you need something done about it.
