I am currently undertaking a research project which has been approved by the Ethics Committee at Liverpool John Moores University. The project involves an online survey to be completed by chronic pain sufferers.

Previous research suggests that Time Perspective is a factor which has implications for the management of chronic conditions. Time Perspective relates to whether we focus on the past, present or future and whether we focus on this in a positive or negative way. This study aims to explore Time Perspective in individuals diagnosed with a chronic pain condition and how this is associated with factors affecting management of chronic pain conditions.

This is an extremely badly thought survey. It will not give helpful answers because it makes the assumption that "Time Perspective" is the only factor. There are other important factors which have a great influence on pain control which the survey does not consider at all.

Hi there,

I have completed the survey up to a certain point (page 11, I think) but I'm afraid the line of questioning felt leading - the only answers available do not relate to my personal experience - and I didn't want to answer any more. This was frustrating, as I am very interested in participating in research on pain, but I just can't explain my experience with tick boxes, and my answers could easily change day to day (even hour to hour), for example, 'rating my pain on a scale of 1 to 10' would differ daily (actually, my attitude and time perspective may well change just as often depending on what I'm experiencing that particular day). Living with pain is just far more complex than the questions allow for.

I am, however, interested in any research in to living with chronic pain as there appears to be a real lack of knowledge in the medical profession, and wish you well with your work.

Seems to be the survey has been completed by someone who has never experienced any condition with pain of any kind other wise the questions would be addressed accordingly !!!

Copy the link then paste it onto a new page at the top and it will work. I have filled it in to the best of my ability as any pain research could be helpful. It didn't account for different types of pain and it didn't take into account that people could be in constant pain but I think it would be difficult to get the perfect research questionnaire as pain is not a straightforward objective thing. At least they are trying to help.

I have lived with chronic pain since 1984, been on opioids for the last fifteen years and never had to raise the dose. It has worked for me and the numerous joints affected.
