I have just bought a mobility scooter and my pain has increased significantly due to the bumpy footpaths. Is it possible to get a permit to ride on a smooth road

Hi Bruce. Your profile doesn't say where you are but if you are in the UK then there are few roads that don't have regular potholes. Any class 3 scooter is allowed on the public road. Ie a scooter with lights, horn, mirrors, and a speed of 8 mph. You need flashing amber lights if used on a dual carriageway and not allowed on a motorway. If you bought a pavement scooter 4 mph without the lights etc then it is only allowed to cross a road.

Thanks RibvanRey, Sorry I should have mentioned I am in a

Australia, My machine can do 10kmph legally and I am only allowed on roads if the footpath is too bumpy which is a debatable point with some police people. It is fitted out as a road machine.

I was just wondering if anyone had experienced increased pain because of the scooter... all of a sudden I can barely walk.

Yep. I bought a new wheelchair recently and had that built with suspension in the front too. The front transfers the majority of the jolt and my new Frogs Legs reduces the 'hit' by near 80%. It is fantastic.

Any chance you can change model of scooter to one with suspension?

This model has front and rear suspension... 2 main problems the exit and entry across roads is sometimes too steep + railway crossings are very bumpy and I have 2 to traverse., I am fairly sure that the bumping is actually causing more problems than helping... may have to sell it and go back to walking with a stick.

To be fair I've considered that at some point I may be asking for similar info and I don't think you could have received a more informative reply,

Thanks to HTH.Rib

Does it have or can it be fitted with anti tipper bars. These are rods with small castors that extend about 9 in in front and behind in pairs. They are fitted to ride UK kerb stones of 4 in.

Yes it has all the bells and whistles fitted... it has been suggested that an air pillow for my bum may help also letting the tyres down however that may strain the motor, not too sure what the minimum air pressure should be but I have them set at 25psi all around. This getting old isn't what it's cracked up to be.

Oh. My scooter used 8 to 10 psi and my wchair uses 120 psi so can't help you there. Maybe you could hire a chauffeur to drive over the hard bits for you ;-)

My spine damage is S2 - T 12 but with lots of other injuries so jarring is V painful for me too. How you find a solution. I don't think a cushion would help. I had a Roho and it didn't.

Thanks Rib, I guess I will just have to try everything and if that doesn't work, go back to walking... what we need is a hovercraft!

Why not. A Brit motorcycle racer just broke the UK record on one at 80+ mph.

Good night Bruce.
