Do you mean at once or over the course of a day?

Over the course of the day. Has also taken 15 tabs some other days

The odd extra tablet of Tramadol accidentally taken shouldn't do much harm but of course this varies from person to person as we are all different in the way we react to drugs and the amount of side effedcts we get. If the person is increasingly taking more tablets than prescribed they do need help. Problems are more likely to occur if they are already on other medication as it can increase the effects of the drug. They really need to see their doctor urgently if they are finding the normal dose of Tramadol is not helping their pain. If they are taking more Tramadol in order to get a "high" again they need help. Try to get them to discuss this with their GP as soon as possible.

She tells her gp their not working and he gives her more

If they aren't working then I would think an alternative should be suggested. You don't say why they have been prescribed or if the GP has said how many she can take.

Strong prescription drugs are all dangerous if not carefully monitored and checked for suitability with other meds.

If the higher dose is working, her GP knows exactly how many are being takeb - then fine. Any doubt then she must speak with GP and explain even higher dose isn't helping.

Taking more than you are prescribed is overdosing as far as your doctor would be concerned. If you feel you are needing more than the prescription label tells you that you can take, then you need to go back to your doctor and discuss it. For them to help you properly, you need to be very honest about how much you are actually taking, even if it is a lot more than they think you are taking.

One real danger of taking too many strong pain killers is that it can suppress your breathing. I've now known two people who died during the night because they had been overdosing on their strong pain killers, and the cause of death was respiratory arrest - i.e. they stopped breathing.

Hi, I was supposed to take 8 in a24 hour period, however when my situation was dire I would have taken at least 14...the pharmacist seemed more concerned filling the repet so soon, but I assured him the doc was ok with it. I rarely take them now..having said that I do know some folk that think tramadol is hell as they have become dependant on it, or rely on it too much so I would urge caution

Hi baybeelis

I have always been told no more than 400mg per day, so that's 500...maybe lucky but over 400mg is considered dangerous & manufacturer can not be held accountable...also I'd be really worried about organ damage! If 400 doesn't work than its the wrong type or if the pain can be verified then doc would send to pain doctor. They are incredibly easierly adjusted by the body, meaning if taken for fun, relaxation or abused the increase in dose will be rapid. Stop if for fun, change meds if pain is legitimate! Best of luck

hi, taking more than the stated dose can be very dangerous, i found that when i was on Tramadol i took 1 tram and 1 paracetamol this had a far better pain relieving effect but like any drug taken your system becomes used to it and i had to go to the pain clinic as they specialise in pain killing drugs where as your G P is not a specialist in pain, i am now on morphine patches and they work far better for me, so i would strongly recommend that you get a referral to the pain clinic A SA P.

Yes. Look up serotonin syndrome. People die from taking too much. Please get whoever has taken 10 tramadol to a&e.

Hello

Generally such a small overdose should not cause any problems. If your GP feels you are trustworthy they can allow some latitude in the taking of Opiate type medications.

Tramadol

Over the last few weeks Tramadol has become a Class Three pain medication and in the future like now you will need an additional signature on the reverse of your script, a blue box on the top right hand side, just initial.

Sometimes I understand that some practices GP s are not signing off now on these capsules. And sign at the reception if it has been a repeat prescription. This is a bit of a faff although I imagine this will return to normal with the reception or chemist just asking for a extra mark

Hi. baybeeliz I don't know what the limit of the dose is but I do know that Tramadol is a morphine based drug and therefore addictive so tell your friend to go back to the doctor and be honest about the dose.-Pippingford55
